🚨 Research Alert 🚨 I think it is important to share this pioneering study just published in the New England Journal of Medicine that demands our attention: "Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Atheromas and Cardiovascular Events." Conducted as a prospective, multicenter, observational study, it explored the presence of Microplastics and Nanoplastics - MNPs - in carotid artery plaque of patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy. Findings revealed a startling correlation: patients with MNPs in their arterial plaque showed a markedly higher risk of experiencing major cardiovascular events, such as myocardial infarction, stroke, or death, over a 34-month follow-up period. This research is among the first to directly link MNPs exposure to heightened cardiovascular risk in humans, building on previous preclinical studies that hinted at this alarming connection. The implications of these findings are profound, urging a reevaluation of our environmental policies and personal habits concerning plastic use and disposal. We should encourage innovation and adherence to sustainability principles to safeguard our health and the environment for future generations. #EnvironmentalHealth #CardiovascularResearch #Microplastics #Nanoplastics #NEJM #PublicHealthAwareness https://lnkd.in/dBqEcTR8

7moGreat work. Scary. Wonder how much distal vessels are affected.
