St Barths. One captain's view from the Bridge Maybe too many photos, posts from St Barths this time of year….screenshots of marinetraffic and drone shots of wonderful yachts sharing an anchorage. Mine is yet another, but not to play yachtspotter, to give a captain's thoughts on the gathering. My St Barths experience is of watching weather, movements of other yachts, anchor swing circles, swell, tender transfers, swell, moving guests between yachts and did I mention swell. It is a great time as a mariner; to anchor well and to behave respectfully to nearby yachts. St Barths is that rarity, alongside Monaco Grand Prix and some others in our calendar where the diaspora gathers and the performance of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Normally yachts are geographically isolated, playing a zero sum game to deliver that elusive ‘perfect destination’ - "if you are there - I cannot be” and therefore, without knowing each other, we are in a (mostly) silent competition. St Barths differs, and those that seek to play a zero-sum game at the expense of others are called-out, either by VHF or more privately judged on yacht bridges and tenders. I know as I was once playing this game…our yacht's anchorage at the expense of others - oh, the fragile male captain's ego 😎. Would I rather be entertaining the guests in Palau, a long way from the collective? Maybe yes, but maybe no - I love leveraging the service offering on the shoulders of other great yachts. It is a privilege to be amongst those that I look up to in yachting and see their operations on show. Oh….I last stepped ashore in St Barths around 2007…for the captains it is best to come back here on holiday.
