Spotters are the unsung heroes of the mining industry, controlling and guiding excavator operators in the pits to indirectly help prevent dilution and save thousands of dollars for any organization. Abilio Tome, a hardworking Mozambican with a smiling face, is one of these essential #Spotters working in Northern Mozambique. While every organization may have its own minimum mining width, those with limited resources & plant processing limitations rely on Spotters to play a crucial role under the guidance of geotechs and geologists. When we look at opportunities to grow the economy, we can perhaps analyze the job creation for Papua New Guineans as well and ensure these jobs are kept in-country and held by nationals. If not, we are losing out on the opportunity to employ our own when we allow jobs to be out-sourced despite the source of revenue being from PNG, our home soil. We are missing out on the income (SWT) tax that should be collected if these jobs/services were held in-country, by our very own nationals.

A truly insightful and engaging two days at the #JoburgIndaba this year. The cautious optimism was palpable with signs that the #GNU is definitely impacting the South African mining industry in a positive way. A few of the topical points this year included- - how do we learn from other countries and drive #exploration in South Africa in order to continue the growth path of the industry - which minerals are #criticalminerals and what does that mean for the mining companies - what are Big Business and Small Business seeing in the industry and what are they doing to assist in driving growth and economic development in the country - what legislative reforms are needed to encourage investment and to assist with ensuring the industry remains a “sunrise” industry. I have given a few suggestions around the last point in my recent article in #SAMining. It was also truly encouraging to see so many DMPR officials, Council for Geoscience representatives, the DDG, the DG and the Minister at the #JoburgIndaba. In fact the Minister was there for both days… engaging the various stakeholders in person… Is this not a sign of the “trust gap” closing? Thanks again to Bernard Swanepoel and his incredible Resources for Africa team for pulling off a truly worthwhile event! Reflecting on the recent launch of Pan African Resource’s R2,5b, world class surface remining operation: Mogale Tailings Retreatment. The conversations that have stuck with me revolve around the commitment, and dare I say ‘Pride’, with regards to the safety of everyone involved in delivering this Masterstroke of South African Gold Mining Investment. Arriving early as I like to do; I was escorted around the plant by Gideon Ramabu. I was commenting on how impressive the plant was looking and expressing my amazement at how quickly it had been developed and how much of a positive contribution the operation will make to all stakeholders etc etc. when Gideon politely but enthusiastically interrupted me by saying: “Yeah Jim, that’s all great and basically par for the course, but you wanna know what’s even more impressive and I’m most proud of?” ME: Ok, go on then. GIDEON: The fact that more than one-and-a-half-million person hours have been spent in the construction without a single injury. We’ve literally had zero LTI’s. Gideon continued to break down some of the safety stats to me and I could clearly see how much this meant to him. In the speeches later on, George Corlett, presented the same stats with the same enthusiasm to the invited guests and it produced the loudest applause of the day. It’s a consistent theme whenever I have the opportunity to speak to the EXEC team at Pan African Resources. Two years ago, on November 7th, the tailings dam of the Williamson Diamond mine in Tanzania burst. While affected persons were compensated swiftly, many still feel the impact of this environmental mining accident to this day. Events like this stress the importance of responsible mining and human rights and environmental due diligence to the highest standards and of providing remediation that is adapted to the local context and the long-term needs of those affected.
