Designing the Mazingira Day Graphic As a designer, the idea of perfect can be paralyzing. But, as one of my favorite designers, Seso, tweeted, "There is no perfect design, and all it takes to be great is practice." Sometimes, you just have to do it scared. Here’s a bit about the thought process behind this design: ➤ Background Image: Many Kenyans have fond memories of Uhuru Park—from boat rides to family outings. Yet, today, it's not the accessible public space it used to be. Choosing this image was an intentional nod to what we’ve lost and what we need to fight to preserve. (Also, let’s talk about how difficult it is to find that perfect image as a designer! 😅) ➤ October 10 Layout: Using the lake and park as a background for the “October 10” text was a fun design challenge. I found inspiration from a Pinterest post (seriously, if you’re a designer and not using Pinterest for ideas, you’re missing out!) and adapted it to blend in with the natural theme of Mazingira Day. ➤ Wangari Maathai Quote: This was a no-brainer. There is no Uhuru Park without her legacy, and including this quote felt like a small tribute to her efforts in keeping our green spaces alive. (Fun fact: I originally picked a different quote from her, but my employer thought it was a bit too grim 😂) This graphic is more than just a design—it’s a message about advocating for our environment while embracing the ups and downs of growing as a designer. As a Triqui descendant, amoung others in my mestiza heritage, I want to share about Tequio, a core practice in Triqui culture. Tequio is mandatory community service, essential for earning respect and authority in Triqui society—it's a duty and way of life. In Tequio, all able community members (especially men 16+) contribute unpaid work for communal good. This includes agriculture and maintaining community infrastructure. It's a prerequisite for leadership roles, which are proposed yearly by a general assembly. Reciprocity isn't a one-time act or something to offset "sins" like corporate carbon credits. It's an ongoing commitment. In traditions like the Kogi Kaggaba (Colombia), offerings called Pagamentos acknowledge what we take from nature: air, water, food, land. We must uplift indigenous wisdom keepers and their communities who've preserved these medicines for millenia. Let's ensure reciprocity is indigenous-led and truly impactful. What could the concept similar to Tequio look like in Western society? When Siuhuu was launched 2 years ago, I was advised that, with the marketplace now live, I needed to go and promote it. I reached out to various Pacific organizations and news media, which resulted in several interviews and articles about Siuhuu. This led to an influx of Pacific-owned businesses joining the platform and customers beginning to make purchases. Putting myself out there for interviews and engaging with the public wasn’t easy; fear often started to creep in. However, my passion for Siuhuu motivated me to push past my discomfort and step out of my comfort zone. I created this platform because I believed it addressed a critical issue for our Pacific Island people that modern technology could solve. Over the past two years, since Siuhuu's launch, I was honored to be selected as one of the 11 Pacific Leaders to participate in the Pacific Islands Young Economic Empowerment Leaders Program in the U.S. This experience opened up many unexpected opportunities and encouraged me to grow further. I was also honoured to be selected for the Investor Readiness Startup Training in Fiji, which recently concluded. Attending various conferences, workshops, and events has broadened my network and provided valuable insights from successful individuals. Entrepreneurship is challenging, but my commitment to Siuhuu and my belief in its potential for the Pacific community drive me to keep moving forward. This is just the beginning, and I am excited about what the future holds for Siuhuu. Building a marketplace is a long-term endeavor that requires passion, patience, and strategic planning. As Abhijit Naskar aptly put it, "It is only our dedication towards our passion that distinguishes a champion from the crowd."🙌🏽
