30 years in Malaysia !
Yes as of 1715 local today 6th November, I can say that my six months secondment by British Aerospace PLC – Military Aircraft Division – Warton, to support an “off set” project here in Malaysia did result is me extending my stay to some extent!
Our task, to help set up SME Aviation and specifically support the MD3-160 “Aerotiga” project. One of two first aircraft programs for Malaysia. Six months turned into three years with us finally getting the MD-3 fully certified by what was then DCA Malaysia and FAA., Even more significantly those successful projects contributing to the national achievement of a Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement (BASA) between our own DCA Malaysia (now CAAM) and the Federal Aviation Authority of the USA, a major accomplishment for Malaysia.
Over the next decades I saw the Malaysian aerospace thrive, decline thrive again in line with world trends and in 2010 – 2013 I had the opportunity to shell we say “ reap what we sowed” in a most positive way, on behalf of a new co I set up for an American owner. A new team of young Malaysian engineers and I where the first, and only organization to utilize the considerable benefits that 1998 BASA between DCA Malaysia and FAA of the USA provides. We developed and eventually certified with the full and pro-active support of, now CAAM, various aircraft lights, TSO standard equipment. Manufactured here in Malaysia and sold worldwide we certified five different products in collaboration with CAAM and via the BASA gained FAA approval as well. Production ran to just over three years and thirty-five hundred light units making the company so successful that it relocated back into the USA.
I am seeing another downturn in our aerospace industry, a downturn that should not be happening, as the world market and particularly new sectors within that world market are there and ideal for Malaysia to benefit from.
If the current experiences of myself and my engineering team and other entrepreneurial are not acknowledged and analyzed.
We do have the engineering knowledge, we do have a very capable, potentially dedicated and enthusiastic new generation of engineer to take us forward, but when we get told by our own aviation authority “we cant support your project, we don’t have the resources” we do have a major issue.
The statement itself is, commendably honest, and allows myself and my organization to move in alternative directions, new directions, find new solutions, survive and grow. What the statement should have actually said is … “we cant support your project, we don’t have the resources so this is what we need to do together to solve the problem”. It can be done because we have a new generation of engineers waiting to be lead, guided and allowed to grow their careers on the back of new sectors, new products and new world market opportunities.
So here’s the next thirty years and one day my retirement with my very own flying boat.
