ARCHITECTURE, EUROPE, LIVING ENVIRONMENT National Institute of Architecture – IN/Arch has created Architecture, Europe, Living Environment program for Euro-community cooperation on design culture, activating international relations with ministries, consulates, cultural institutes, municipalities and associations. Balanced transformations of living environments are fostered by broad visions, informed by complexity, oriented towards identifying real common objectives and qualifying social, cultural and geographical diversity as essential values. This principle emerges in the EU Work Plan on Culture 2023-2026, which affirms the decisive role of culture and cultural heritage in developing social relationships and territorial cohesion, contributing to inclusiveness and economic and environmental sustainability. As Bruno Zevi said in 1959: “IN/ARCH owes the place and the table around which the forces that produce architecture come together”. https://lnkd.in/dDcUAaMB Stay tuned!

<< from the UIC website >> World Architecture Day 2024 Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design World Architecture Day (WAD), created by the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 1985, is celebrated annually on the first Monday of October. This day coincides with the United Nations World Habitat Day, aligning the architectural community’s efforts with global urban development goals. The theme of World Architecture Day 2024 is “Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design” emphasising the role of young architects in urban planning and development. The UIA encourages young architects to engage in participatory processes, contributing fresh perspectives essential for sustainable development. Particular emphasis is placed on fostering resilient urban economies where cities drive growth and recovery through innovative and sustainable practices. Key areas of focus for this years WAD include energy efficiency, waste management, use of sustainable materials and promotion of sustainable mobility. These efforts aim to create environmentally friendly cities that reduce dependence on external resources. Young architects can also enhance citizen participation in decision-making, involve communities in the design process and promote the appropriation and care of public spaces. https://lnkd.in/eQk_Qh5a

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending an enlightening seminar by Philippe Rahm, a visionary architect, at the NUS Department of Architecture. His talk offered a profound exploration into the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and climate—a timely and critical subject as we face the growing challenges of the 21st century. Philip began by revisiting the historical foundations of architecture and urbanism, where climate and health were pivotal in shaping the forms of cities and buildings. He explained how, in the latter half of the 20th century, these considerations were largely sidelined due to the rise of fossil fuel energy, leading to the greenhouse effect and global warming we grapple with today. The crux of his talk was a call to action for architects and urban designers to re-engage with these climatic issues, advocating for designs that prioritize local climatic contexts and sustainable energy resources. Philip emphasized the need to reset our discipline by recognizing atmospheric qualities—air, light, heat, and humidity—as essential building materials. By treating convection, thermal conduction, evaporation, emissivity, and effusivity as design tools, Rahm believes we can revolutionize not only the aesthetics but also the social values of architecture. His approach, grounded in dialectical materialism, suggests a transformative path for architecture in an era of climate change. It was an inspiring and thought-provoking session that challenged us to rethink the way we approach the design of our buildings and cities, placing the environment at the core of our creative processes. Reflecting on Philip's insights, I am more convinced than ever that sustainability must be at the heart of everything we create. As architects, designers, and urban planners, we have a responsibility not only to innovate but to ensure that our work contributes to a healthier, more sustainable future. Sustainability isn't just a trend; it's an imperative that should guide all our decisions and actions moving forward. #architecture #design #sustainability #climaticarchitecture
