An in-depth investigation by Le Monde and Radio France's investigative unit has revealed that several bottled water producers hid the fact that the water they pumped was contaminated from the public, forcing them to use illegal treatment systems before bottling it ... 🔍 30% of bottled water brands are affected by non-compliant treatments intended to deal with different forms of pollutions including bacteriological (presence of E Coli bacteria) or chemical (the presence of pesticide metabolites and other substances) This scandal clearly reveals the urgent need to review the methods and standards for monitoring pollution in our waters 👉 the ongoing update the lists of priority substances for surface water and groundwater (from which the water we bottle is extracted) under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a key text to curb water pollution. Surfrider Foundation Europe European Environmental Bureau Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe are working tirelessly to ensure that this text lives up to the ambitions of the European Green Deal. Currently in the hands of the Council of the EU, we are still waiting for an agreement to be reached between the Member States to take the discussions forward. The updating of the lists will depend on the outcome of the trilogues, but the current process seems to be stagnating, which is particularly worrying. 📢 This affair reveals the illegality and breach of trust associated with mineral waters, which are supposed to be naturally pure. However, beyond this crisis, it highlights a growing concern: groundwater pollution. This scandal highlights widespread environmental pollution, a subject on which the SFE has long been sounding the alarm.
🚨 SCANDALE ABSOLU DANS L'INDUSTRIE DE L'EAU MINÉRALE EN BOUTEILLE! Nestlé et d'autres géants ont caché une contamination en utilisant des traitements interdits. Une enquête approfondie menée par Le Monde et la cellule d'investigation de Radio France a révélé que plusieurs producteurs d'eau en bouteille ont caché au public que l’eau qu’ils pompaient était contaminée, les obligeant à avoir recours à des systèmes de traitements illégaux avant sa mise en bouteille... 🔍 L'enquête révèle que 30% des marques d'eau en bouteille sont touchées par des traitements non conformes 😨 Ces traitements, visent à traiter des contaminations telles que les pollutions bactériologiques (bactéries E Coli) ou chimiques avec la présente de métabolites de pesticides et d’autres substances non spécifiées dans l’enquête. 💔 Nestlé, c’est la goutte d’eau qui fait déborder le vase? Lors d'une réunion secrète à Bercy en 2021, Nestlé a avoué utiliser des traitements non conformes pour pallier le fait que l’eau dans son milieu naturel est polluée, et de ce fait, présente des risques pour la santé. 👀 Et ce n’est pas tout ! Ce scandale révèle bien le besoin urgent de revoir les méthodes et standards de surveillance de la pollution dans nos eaux. Fin 2022 👉 la Commission Européenne a publié une initiative visant à mettre à jour les listes de substances prioritaires pour les eaux de surface et souterraines, d’où sont captées les eaux que l’on met en bouteille, ainsi que les normes qui leur sont associées dans le contexte de la Directive Cadre sur l’Eau (DCE). Septembre 2023 👉 le Parlement européen a voté en faveur de cette initiative tout en renforçant de nombreux éléments de la proposition de la Commission. Surfrider Foundation Europe travaille toujours sans relâche en coalition avec nos alliés, European Environmental Bureau et Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe pour s’assurer que ce texte soit à la hauteur des ambitions du Pacte Vert européen. Les listes actuelles nécessitent une mise à jour urgente, car elles ne garantissent pas une protection adéquate des écosystèmes et de la santé humaine face aux risques liés à la pollution de l'eau. La révision en cours représente une opportunité cruciale pour nous assurer que les normes reflètent véritablement les besoins sanitaires et environnementaux de notre société. Cette affaire révèle une illégalité et une rupture de confiance liées aux eaux minérales, censées être naturellement pures. Cependant, elle met aussi en évidence une préoccupation croissante : la pollution des eaux souterraines. Ce scandale souligne une pollution environnementale d'envergure, un sujet sur lequel nous tirons la sonnette d'alarme depuis longtemps. It’s time to bring forth a critical concern: the persistent and escalating threat of chemical pollution in European seas 🚨 On January 24 & 25, the European Commission is holding its Zero Pollution Stakeholder Platform Workshop and we need decision-makers to face the alarming reality of chemical pollution wreaking havoc on marine ecosystems and human health 🌎 What are we talking about? 👀 🌐 Chemicals are all around us, shaping our daily lives. From clothes and medicines to household items and energy sources, we interact with thousands of chemicals regularly. The chemical industry is integral to all economic sectors, and trends indicate a growing reliance on these substances, a trend set to continue. In numbers? 1️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ Global chemical production grew from 1.2 to 2.3 billion tonnes between the beginning of the 21st century and 2017. It is foreseen to triple by 2050. Currently, the EU is the second largest producer in the world after China. In terms of total value, European chemical sales rose by 38% between 2000 and 2020, ultimately reaching €499 billion. Despite global efforts to combat certain sources of pollution at EU level, chemical pollution remains a major challenge that prevents healthy waters from being obtained in Europe's seas, rivers and lakes. 🫁 Human Health Concerns: Chemical pollution poses severe and long-term risks to human health, with multiple exposure routes, including inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. There is concrete evidence that a range of chemical substances causes serious health impacts (Carcinogenic substances, Allergenic substances, Endocrine disrupters, Persistent Organic Pollutants...). The diverse health effects of chemical pollutants are wide-ranging and complex. Notably, marine chemical pollution extends beyond seafood consumption. 🐠 Ocean Impact : In marine environments, various key chemicals, including persistent organic pollutants (POPs), heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and more, adversely affect biodiversity. Documented impacts include disruptions to reproductive functions, immune systems, and neurological damage in species, leading to increased mortality rates. Shockingly, 85% of marine areas in Europe are deemed 'problematic' due to chemical pollution. Recognizing and addressing these environmental challenges is crucial for safeguarding both human health and the well-being of marine ecosystems. Moving forward with the recast of the #UWWTD 🙌 it's a positive sign to witness steady progress in this process. A lot of work remains to be done before we reach an ambitious agreement but we are hopeful that the upcoming trilogue phase will help achieve a revised Directive that is fit for the future 💧
✅ Good news! The recast of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive is going strong and steady. Initiated in 2022, this revision process is a chance to better control the discharge of wastewater into the ocean. The European Parliament has now adopted its position. It confirms that plastic pollution caused by biomedia losses should be eventually adressed, by regulating their use. More stringent provisions should be guaranteed to manage and treat wastewater. An additional (quaternary) treatment phase should also be guaranteed to treat a wide range of harmful chemical substances. Finally, integrated wastewater management plans could help minimize the risk of stormwater overflow & urban runoff. ⚠️ Despite some positive signals, many efforts are still needed to avoid the release of pollutants into the environment. 👊 Ambitions can be further raised to strengthen EU water policy and protect the Ocean & people from urban wastewater pollution. #pollution #wastewater #wastewatertreatment #biocarriers #environment #europe #water #politics #EU #UWWTD
