Jacqueline Whitworth-Allan, Emily Blackwell and Ben Wayles recently spent a sunny Wednesday in Caernarfon, Wales to do a site walkaround for a #placemaking project. 🏡 They met the client Cyngor Gwynedd Council and other important project stakeholders, such as the Harbour Trust and representatives from local businesses at Cei Llechi, a nearby artisan shopping village. The project will develop concept design proposals for the space fronting the shopping village, which was formerly a car park. The client team has big aspirations to create a vibrant new #PublicRealm space to attract footfall, increase dwell time, support placemaking and local distinctiveness, and enhance the amount of #GreenInfrastructure in the town. 🌳 The site’s location is exceptional – it occupies a beautiful waterfront location with 360 views, lies in the immediate setting of Caernarfon Castle, a Grade 1 listed medieval building, and it’s a stone’s throw from the main square in the town. 🏰 It was great to meet the client, who is really passionate about improving this public realm space for the #community. We will be back in town to facilitate #StakeholderConsultation on our concept designs in mid-September. We’ll be using live Welsh translation services to ensure our approach is as #inclusive and #collaborative as possible. 🗣️

Great Take on American #Urbanism: Michael Natelli https://lnkd.in/dsFtRDjX Fixing the Fugly: A Distinctly American Urbanism Alright, let's call it like it is. Most of America’s built environment is, well, pretty ugly. Strip malls, gas stations & parking lots. We took a bad idea & said, "Yeah, let’s do that everywhere" And we didn't just stop there. We exported this model globally. We may have given the world Taylor Swift & Star Wars, but we also gave them the suburban sprawl as the ultimate American dream. Not our best work. Reversing it all feels like trying to shove toothpaste back into the tube. America is the 3rd largest country by area with a huge chunk covered in these suburban patterns we’ve been developing for over 60 years. The logistics of a complete reset are mind-boggling, not to mention the astronomical costs. Perhaps we’re in too deep. But what if we’re not, and we could turn this ship around? What if we could innovate our way out of this mess & turn it into something to be proud of? What if the relics of the suburban experiment could become the raw material for a thriving, uniquely American urbanism? America’s the land of the Extreme Home Makeover. The Fixer Upper. If Chip & Jo can turn broken barn wood into a door, why can’t we make our gas stations & car washes into the proverbial kitchen tables of our next great places? Tattooing Over Our Scars The challenge in reshaping America’s built environment is not just the sprawling subdivisions we’ve built across the nation. It’s the rest of what comes with them: gas stations, parking lots, etc. Any sort of rebuild will require embracing these structures as raw material for innovation. These are the scars of our past & it’s time to get the epic tattoo that makes us wear those scars with more confidence. We’ll carry these scars with us, but they’ll just look a little different. What if we gave these places a second life & integrated them into a new chapter? Miami did with its underpass park, The Underline, 120 acres of previously undesirable & unused land is now accessible to walk, bike & more. What about sterile big box retail stores & commercial strip malls? What if in a see of sprawling subdivisions, these became the first parts of town to become truly flourishing neighborhoods? These transformations are not just about aesthetics. They bring tangible economic & social benefits. Revitalized spaces attract new businesses, create jobs & increase property values. They foster community by providing places for people to gather, relax & engage with their neighbors. And building places we can be proud of doesn't require a blank canvas. While some of what we've done should stay in the past, much of it is known for. Our current cultural moment has depressed our belief in what this nation is capable of, but the opportunity is still there for the taking. What if we could build an American urbanism that gives the playbook for undoing the suburban experiment around the world?

Hi all, IBAVI (Balearic Housing Institute) has built 19 Social housing units in Palma. "The global solution for both buildings and public space aims to encourage residents to go out 'a la fresca’ on summer nights, with chairs and 'rockers', and is an example for recovering the model of the Mediterranean city, dense, compact, low-rise and equipped with public spaces that reduce the 'heat island' effect." Check more about the project on DIVISARE https://lnkd.in/dJBD-tbV

Arcaded streets are expressive, flexible, and adaptable. Their beauty level denotes a street's or building's place in the urban hierarchy. They easily adapt to walkable topography, as exemplified by how elegantly Leon Krier's arcades in Cayala, Guatemala, negotiate the site's gentle slopes. It was an absolute pleasure to help bring the Korako Whānau Papakāinga to Open Christchurch Architecture Festival last weekend. Thank you to Christine Korako, Nuk Korako, and Perry T Royal for opening your beautiful space to the masses. If I'm honest though, I nominated this papakāinga for inclusion in Open Christchurch for selfish reasons. . Professionally, I spend a lot of time trying to get enabling papakāinga policy into plans. Often though, these provisions are heavily opposed. Submitters will say that living next to a papakāinga will reduce their property values, increase crime in their neighborhood, destroy the amenity of the area etc... and I know part of this fear is because when many people see the word 'papakāinga' they think of caravans, portacoms, sheds, and other piecemeal developments. The Korako Whānau Papakāinga is a world away from those misconceptions! . By inviting people to see this beautiful (and much more typical, I might add) example of what papakāinga can be, I'm hoping that it becomes the new picture that pops into people's minds when they think of this typology. I also hope that every single person who visited (of which there were over 100!) shares their experience with their friends and neighbours, and that it all helps reduce that fear of the unknown that underpins many of these submissions. . If we apropriatly provide for papakāinga developments in our plans, we will end up with more developments like this. If we continue to make it almost impossible to build papakāinga, then we are more likely to get outcomes that aren't fit for purpose, which only perpetuates those negative steriotypes. We get the urban form we allow under our plans. If developments like the Korako Whānau Papakāinga are what we want more of, then we need to stop fighting papakāinga provisions and start supporting them. #papakāinga #rapaki #māoriarchitecture #royalassociates #perryroyal #christchurch #openchristchurch #planning #policy Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture & City Making

👉🏻Check out this new guide which includes practical, #local actions that #cities can take to improve their #public spaces and #engage meaningfully with the #community 😄
📣 NEW from C40’s Urban Planning and Design team 📣 C40 has released new guidance for cities to improve their public spaces. Public spaces should be places for everyone, they should be adaptable and most importantly, centred around people. Yet often, their potential is not reflected in how they are designed. Parks, playgrounds, plazas and waterfronts bring communities together and are integral to our lives, livelihoods and happiness. Practical, local actions are outlined in the guide, that allow cities to engage meaningfully with local communities. Read the guide and transform your city: https://c40.me/3QJSHgb

The new approach to this so called "URBAN PLANNING" should be to DECENTRALIZE, go back to living simple, living in communities, sharing resources, sharing traditional wisdom and knowledge. Because THAT is the ONLY WAY TO SAVE THIS PLANET and the WESTERN WORLD needs to let go of this dependence on materialism and encourage Western city dwellers to do the same as what most non western communities are doing. SAVE THE WORLD. GO BACK TO TRADITION, CULTURE, NATURE !

Neighborhood Building & Activation ++ [improving communities]>> why tactical urbanism matters >> Tactical urbanism refers to the temporary, low-cost, and often grassroots efforts to make positive changes in a city or neighborhood to improve its livability and economic vitality. This can include activities such as: *pop-up parks, *public art installations, *temporary bike lanes, or *street festivals. Tactical urbanism is important for cities because it allows for quick and cost-effective ways to test out potential improvements before committing to larger, more permanent changes. It also provides a way for communities to be more actively involved in shaping their own neighborhoods and creating a sense of ownership and pride. Photo by Umbrella Sky Project

Historic preservation isn't sophisticated. It's common sense to take care of the things we already have in place. No fancy gimmicks or long list of instructions to make historic preservation work for your community. You have a place, right? And you have old buildings with problems? You're not alone. We can work together on how to turn things around for your community. I like to call it "Placekeeping". Just nurturing what we have and making it last. Architectural eyesores to #Architecturaleyecandy. It's a common sense approach to #urbanplanning, #economicdevelopment, #communityengagement, #realestate, and #buildingconstruction. Reach out to Jessica at Preservation Forward. I'd love to hear about your old building problems and how #historicpreservation can help.
