𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 When applying for a retail position, you should expect the interviewer to ask about your prior experience with retail or customer service positions, such as: • Have you ever worked in retail? • How long have you worked in retail? • What type of retail stores have you worked for? • How comfortable are you offering styling suggestions to customers? • Do you have experience managing inventory? • Are you experienced with folding and presenting clothes for sale on the floor? • Are you comfortable asking customers to sign up for the company credit card? • Tell me about a busy time when you were working and how you handled the rush of customers. • How long do you intend to stay in retail as a career? • Have you ever been a manager or informally placed in charge of running a shift at a previous retail job?

I always chuckle when someone I've known for a long time asks "What is it that you do again?"...typically with their head cocked to one side. The simple answer: "I help brands grow/optimize their brick-and-mortar portfolio". Sometimes that's enough. Sometimes I expand: "I help brands find places to build new locations, negotiate the deals, and then monitor the project until it's open to the public." I've been doing this same thing since...wait for it...1994. I've done it for some huge brands (I'm looking at you, Starbucks) and some smaller brands (hey Protein Bar & Kitchen, I miss you). Even after 30yrs, I can still get excited to work, because every time I do my job, 30 people get a job. Know a brand that can benefit from this kind of experience and enthusiasm? Retail is not for everyone… Even though it’s considered to be an easy start for those who lack experience or skills. Many of us started as a part-timers while finishing our studies before getting the “real job”. But somehow we got drawn into this never ending flow of customers, Black Fridays, promos and Super Sales, mad times with colleagues, crazy experiences with customers - whatever was it, but few of us actually stayed and chose to build a career in retail. And believe me that’s not an easy one! Put aside fun and jokes, it is only cover up for the pressure you’ll be dealing with on a daily basis. Customers are not always fun, in most cases you will be dealing with demanding, irritated, frustrated people and it’s your job to find a way to make them feel better. Because at the end of the day it’s not only about making sales, it’s “customer satisfaction” what actually makes them coming back to you. Aside from mastering people skills and being (or acting) friendly all day long you will still have to run the show. Those people who never worked in retail store might not realize that we are performing the same administrative tasks they do in offices, but we always have to do it on the go, without the luxury of having “own desk and comfy chair”. Preparing reports, analysing data, scheduling and planning, creating trainings, addressing IT and maintenance issues - those just a few things store managers are responsible for. And it has to be done quick before store gets busy. Being in retail for so many years has taught a lot about human nature, I aquired skills like multitasking, manpower utilization, planning, data analysis and so much more. Retail job if taken seriously could be an excellent school of life and potentially lucrative career path. But only if you can handle it 🤣 All I wanted to say retail is not for weak people. If you managed to survive and thrive for few years you already did something most people are not capable of. So don’t let anyone make you think that it’s not a “real job”. It is as real as you take it! #retail

Lessons I learned from working 10+ years of retail: ➡️ Be knowable People connect with other people, not the sign on the front of the store. People came in either familiar with the brand or not, but it was up to us (the people working at the store) to share the store's brand story, animate the experience and most importantly, help the customers get what they needed/wanted. This is how you build relationships. Repeat customers knew a lot about the product and the brand, but now they wanted to know a little more about me—the person recommending the products, navigating the variables to find the perfect fit for my customer. Knowing more about me helped them trust and ultimately connect. These exchanges enriched my part-time job experience—it felt like the work I was doing was actually helping solve a problem, even if the problem was trying to find someone a great pair of jeans. TLDR: Talk to strangers, share the human experience with each other, even if it's just at the mall. Also finding a good pair of jeans is hard 👖 #Retail #TalkToPeople

I haven’t posted recently about my day job, so here’s an update!! Yesterday we officially opened the 3rd brick and mortar location! Crazy right? In ONE year we have opened three completely new stores starting from less than nothing to be fully built, stocked, merchandised, staffed, and operating. This experience has been somewhat of a challenge, yet in my opinion has also been a fairly easy achievement. And no, it hasn’t been easy in the sense that it’s easy work or a simple feat to undertake. You see, it’s all about how you approach things. If you approach things with the confidence that you can accomplish any task necessary, you and your staff will not only be more effective at doing so, but it will be more fulfilling as well.

A day in the life of Retail. When I was in corporate and had a job interview, I always got the same question about my resume: “You managed Eddiebauer stores? What was that like?” People are fascinated if you have management experience at a storied and cherished brand. Working at Brooks Brothers as an Assistant Store Manager is no different. Actually, running a store is a lot like running a business. Because it IS a business that someone has entrusted to you to run. Retail is a great training/proving ground for building a knowledge and experience base in sales, project management, relationship building, hiring, human resources, merchandising, inventory control…the list is endless. What I love best about running a store, is the opportunity to leave my footprint on a business with my creativity and sales performance. Today, I got to shop at Costco. Since we moved last summer, the closest store is 45min away. We reluctantly joined Sam’s trying to tell ourselves it was “the same” but after a few visits, we realized it was not. I found that the comparison of these stores align with my job searching efforts & some of my work experience with different companies. On the outside, they seem similar. They provide the same services. Only when you peel back the curtain and start to look around, you realize that the quality is drastically different, how the employees are treated are drastically different & the overall experience is drastically different. As job seekers (& shoppers), we can be picky. Do yourself a service, save yourself some heartache & find your Costco!
