This simple yet powerful arrangement reminds me of the beauty and strength of diversity. In our workplaces, just like these bowls, each individual brings their own unique background, skills, and perspectives to the table. It’s this diversity that drives innovation, fosters creativity, and enables us to solve complex challenges in ways we never thought possible. Imagine if all these bowls were the same – the display would lose its charm and vibrancy. The same goes for our teams. Is It Safe to Be You? During a spring visit to Bergen, my 4-year-old daughter, Tiril, posed a question: “Mom, can children go to jail in this country?” I reassured her, “No, my dear, we’re still in Norway, where children are not imprisoned.” She then asked if adults could face jail time. I replied, “Yes, if someone commits a serious offense.” June marks Pride month, and I’m heartened by the widespread allyship and support from individuals, communities, and organizations toward the LGBTQI+ community. While it lasts only a month, it comes with a value commitment for the full year. Personally, I’ve never feared imprisonment due to my identity or faced discrimination based on whom I love. The idea of others merely “tolerating” my sexual orientation has never crossed my mind. But how can I truly understand the LGBTQI+ experience? I can’t. Yet I have a choice: to be an ally and celebrate - or be neutral and merely tolerate. I’ve invested time in learning and forming my own convictions. I celebrate Pride because I believe all people share equal value. We should celebrate one another, not merely tolerate each other. Everyone deserves to feel safe and be true to themselves, loving whom they love. In Norsk Hydro, we proudly embrace #Pride. Our understanding grows with each lesson, emphasizing its importance. This year, in collaboration with Amnesty International, our theme is “Safe With Us - Everyone is welcome in Hydro" — safe to express themselves and love whomever they love. No one should be excluded or face imprisonment for being true to themselves, whether in Bergen or any city worldwide. Happy Pride! 🏳️🌈🌈

There have been moments when the way I’ve interacted with the world has left me disturbed, disgusted, and ashamed. This is one of those moments. When I applied to be a cast member at Disneyland Paris for Halloween 2024 🎃, it was meant to be a fun gig—a way to earn some extra cash 💸 while working at one of my favorite places. Naturally, I pictured myself as a Vendeur Boutique 🛍️—selling souvenirs, interacting with guests, and sprinkling a little magic ✨. I’m a former Disney cast member, studying Luxury Management at one of France’s top business schools 🏫🇫🇷. I thought I’d be a shoe-in for retail. Yet, as I prepare for my interview, I sit with unease. Just as I, you may wonder why… Because I might be offered a Hôte de Propreté (Custodial Host) role. My brain whispered that I’m “overqualified,” somehow “deserving” of more. Knowing a thing to be right, and doing the right thing are two distinct notions. Intellectually, I knew that all roles hold equal value in society, but my gut reaction exposed the gap between belief and action. This isn’t about the value of a job. Far from it. Custodial roles, essential services, and maintenance are the backbone of any society. Yet, my initial response exposed a societal perversion in how we assess labor—and, disturbingly, the value of people who perform it. How could I, someone who believes in equality and respect, fall into this trap? But what would make me, ever-so-special, exempt from it? 🤔 Modern Western societies develop what I coin “labor value dissonance”—the tension that arises when there’s a perceived disconnect between the importance of labor and how it’s actually compensated. This explains why roles like doctors and lawyers are idolized while others are dismissed. 🤔 What does it say about us when we hesitate to see the inherent worth in every job? A company executive should not only acknowledge the importance of every role but be prepared to step in and perform those tasks. This hands-on approach fosters respect and connection, much like Walt Disney, who picked up trash in his parks. That’s the kind of executive I strive to be—leading by example, deeply engaged at every level. I can already hear voices chiming in: “Even if there’s a social stigma, we can still show respect, gratitude, and appreciation for those in these roles.” Thanks to those who perform the basic human decency that so many neglect—treating all with respect. But that’s not my point. This post is a call for introspection. Would you feel discomfort, as I did, if offered such a position? Would that reaction challenge your perception of your worth and the value you bring? 💡 Push past the biases. Intellectualize our world with more empathy, respect, and understanding. Promoting the diversity equity and inclusion in the outdoors and its careers requires a lot of gear and equipment and training. Turning indoors Americans into outdoor Americans is what we do. Exposing them to outdoor careers that they didn’t know existed is our mission. Where will your outdoor employees come from?
