Today, January 11, according to the 2024 National Day Calendar, is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Although slavery officially ended in 1865 in the United States, slavery in the form of human trafficking of children and adults still continues today. Despite the nearly worldwide adoption of international and domestic norms to address and prevent human trafficking, we continue to witness traffickers exploit people in the United States and around the world. We know this is also a problem on our southern border. Every Presidential proclamation since the year 2000, for January ends with a call to action for all Americans to recognize the vital role everyone can play in combating all forms of human trafficking. https://lnkd.in/gw4GZjMw

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. In Ukraine, Russian forces continue to weaponise sexual violence – gang rapes, rape at gunpoint and castration are just a few examples of what Ukrainian women, men and children are subjected to. Ensuring accountability for these crimes, along with support to victims, is a priority for Sweden. We are proud to support the UN Commission of Inquiry, United Nations Human Rights, International Criminal Court, UN Women, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and others to this end. #EndSexualViolence

The first duty of the state is to safeguard the security of its citizens, but we have seen a progressive collapse of policing in South Africa. According to Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach: former prosecutor for the National Prosecuting Authority and a Member of Parliament, to turn this situation around we must leverage all the resources at our disposal, both private and public. We are #REimaginingSA at the #psgconf2024.
