Another year of Electronic Bag Tag innovation for the Lufthansa Group ✈️ This past year has once again highlighted the Lufthansa Group’s role as a first mover in the aviation industry. It’s a story of innovation, collaboration, and progress in the world of digital baggage. These are the two biggest moves the airline group made to further push EBT availability across its network: 1️⃣ Expanding the BAGTAG Platform Lufthansa Group has continued to lead the way by adding more of its airlines to the BAGTAG platform. Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa City Airlines are now making seamless digital baggage handling a reality for even more travellers. 2️⃣ Welcoming BagID Onboard Lufthansa Group also became the first BAGTAG partner to open its DCS setup for BagID, expanding the availability of electronic bag tags for its passengers. The momentum is building, and it’s clear that other airlines are taking notice. The Lufthansa Group’s vision for smarter, more efficient baggage handling is paving the way for the industry, showing what’s possible when technology meets forward-thinking leadership. The AirlineForum 2024 by Lufthansa Systems started with an interesting and inspiring key note by Yves Morieux about productivity and complexity. Albert Einstein once famously remarked, ‘Only a genius can simplify.’ This idea seems to resonate deeply with Yves, who addressed a key issue in modern workplaces: instead of simplifying, we tend to complicate processes. He explored the widespread problems of low productivity and disengagement, criticizing traditional ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ management approaches for adding complexity without tackling evolving business challenges. Yves pointed out that cooperation as a vital jelement in modern management can drive efficiency and reduce resource consumption. Anyone with common sense would understand the importance of 𝐝𝐞-𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 habits/ systems, as it is the only way to opens the doors to innovation, new players to enter as enablers, good/ fair competition, and collaboration. And that’s the thing, right? For years, we’ve held on to legacy systems because they’re familiar—they’ve been the backbone of our industry. But to truly serve travelers in the best way possible and provide value across our entire ecosystem, we must let go of what’s comfortable and embrace the future of travel selling and operations. The shift to 100% Offers and Orders, a key component of MAR is not a tech update—it’s a new way of thinking, an opportunity to build flexibility into airline retail operations, and a chance to deliver personalized, seamless experiences that travelers expect today. I know—letting go of the old ways is hard. There’s nostalgia in what we’ve built; it’s part of our identity. But just like every other industry, we have to grow, too. Modern Airline Retailing is about embracing what’s next, not just for us, but for the travelers who deserve better. And each airline will have its path forward—from larger carriers wanting modular, flexible setups to smaller ones needing complete systems. We’re all in this together.
