🌐 🚁 The future of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) isn't just about flying vehicles—it's about building an entire ecosystem that supports them. As we dive into the AAM Ecosystem dimension of our AAM Readiness Radar Series, we're uncovering a crucial insight: It's not just the aircraft; it's everything that surrounds them. 📊 The Numbers Tell a Story: Over the last five years, 72% of media attention has focused on the aircraft itself. However, essential elements like physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure, and air mobility services have been overlooked, both in terms of visibility and investment. With only 13% of VC investments going into digital infrastructure and a mere 9% into physical infrastructure, there's a stark imbalance that could hinder the sector's growth. 🚦 What's the Missing Link? The path to truly scaling AAM goes beyond eVTOLs. It requires a holistic approach that includes everything from vertiports to air traffic management systems and seamless customer booking experiences. As the saying goes, "It takes a village," and in AAM, it takes a fully developed ecosystem to make it viable. 💡 Key Question: Who is going to step up to fund the critical infrastructure needed to unlock the full potential of AAM? We must look beyond the flying vehicle and think about how to connect the dots. Many of you who are involved with or simply follow the AAM space have probably seen this by now. It's Mark Moore's ranking of eVTOL industry leaders which was recently published in Aviation Week. Mark notes he has a significant difference of opinion with the widely recognized, and dare I say popular AAM Reality Index (ARI) created and maintained by the SMG Group. This is reflected across the bottom two rows of his matrix below, which summarizes his rating on 10 factors he suggests are important for ranking the 14 OEMs therein. This difference of opinion is exemplified with EHang, where Mark ranks the Chinese OEM dead last in the field, compared to the ARI where they share second place and are a stone's throw from the top spot. I applaud the efforts of both parties to bring some clarity to the AAM paradigm, even though I think both efforts leave an awful lot to be desired. I could go on for pages about this but will focus on EHang to close this post out in an abbreviated fashion... On some level it's hard to understand how SMG can rank EHang second in the field with their ARI. This is because their ranking algorithm is proprietary and therefore a mystery to folks like me since it lacks a necessary degree of transparency that Mark actually provides in his ratings below. On the other hand I think Mark's 10 factors fails to recognize the importance of autonomy for achieving success if you define this to include adoption at scale. This alone should raise the ranking of EHang who has a clear lead on this dimension. I also take note that SMG explicitly claims they consider the technology readiness level (TRL) for each OEM but it's hard to tell if autonomy is actually addressed, again due to a lack of transparency in their methodology. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out when the rubber meets the road. I think we will be in for a lot of surprises despite who claims to have a better handle on the industry at this point. #AdvancedAirMobility #AAM #UAM #RAM

"CES®, the most powerful tech event in the world, provides the world a stage for the breakthrough technologies and global innovators that will change the world. To kick off the first day of this unparalleled tradeshow, Supernal, a part of the Hyundai Motor Group, unveiled a physical prototype of its latest release, the SA-2 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The company hopes to reshape how people see mobility and to redefine transportation with this stunning new vehicle." "This initially-piloted electric battery-powered, v-tailed aircraft can accommodate up to 4 passengers, in modular seats which can be reconfigured or even removed in between flight legs. It will be able to cruise at 120 mph at 1500 feet AGL across average trips of 25 to 40 miles. It has 8 rotors, 4 in front and 4 in back, which work together at all times and in all phases of flight. Importantly, during flight, they will remain as quiet as a modern dishwasher, registering only 45 decibels during cruise and 65 decibels during take off and landing." "Supernal’s world renowned 600 person team remains laser-focused on advancing the AAM mission by building a great vehicle to serve and meet our customer needs, Shin explained. The SA-2 takes the best of an airplane, with a safe and smooth inflight experience, and merges it with the best of a helicopter’s ability to land and take off vertically, even in dense urban environments." #evotl #advancedairmobility https://lnkd.in/eSrgb89u
