I would love to hear your thoughts on what you learned during #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek 2024. Let me know in the comments! For me, the discussions were both inspiring and also heartbreaking. I was left with these take-aways: 1) The entire human population is neurodiverse, which is a natural factor of evolution, and equally necessary for a healthy society as biodiversity is for a healthy ecosystem. Approximately 20%+ of people are in the so-called “neurominority.” 2) Intersectionality is a very real experience for women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, when neurodivergence compounds with social and economic disparities. Difficulties due to one factor are often dismissed as caused by another, delaying or denying needed support. 3) Creating safe learning and working spaces, hiring practices, and performance evaluation protocols is an imperative; doing so benefits the entire population, not just the neurominority. 4) The business case for #jobcrafting to fully including neurominorities and their specialized strengths has been made. Let’s stop asking the question and move forward with the inclusion process 5) Neurodiversity is not a condition that requires a cure. The mental health consequences of disclusion, disenfranchisement, and masking (trying to appear neurotypical), do however require support and treatment. 6) Neurodivergence is only a disability when we apply the wrong expectations. Do not ask your inattentive-type ADHD employee to organize and track a project, ask them to creatively solve problems and design efficient processes. 7) There is no right way to experience the world, and some people experience it more intensely than others. Simply internalizing this knowledge opens us up to the empathy needed to create safe learning and working environments for everyone. 8) Change will come quickest when business owners start modeling positive behaviors. Bonus points for doing this by “wearing your labels” and showing that you have lived and understand the challenges that others are experiencing. I’ve dreamed about this for a long time. Studied how belonging creates resilience, and now for the past 5 months I’ve been stepping out into some new dreams of creating community and connection where I live. Most ask me, how do I start? Here’s what I did: - I asked myself: what am I naturally good at that could bring people together? For me that’s dance. - I asked people in my community if they wanted a dance class. I may have posted a video of me dancing in our local grocery store 😂 Your bravery inspires others to be brave. - I set the date and time. I joke with the women I coach and tell them “put a ring on it”. Find the place, set the date and commit to it. - I use an easy registration tool like eventbrite to collect registrations. - share the registration link, but don’t tell people “what” the gathering is, share with them the meaning it will create for all. Invite people in meaningful and creative ways. People WANT to gather. They WANT to connect. TODAY is clarEquality Day. clarEquality day isn't simply about male/female. It's about including everybody and excluding no-one. Over the past months I simply can't comprehend why this is such a trigger for backlash and hate. Yet it is such a trigger. Why do some people see clarEquality as a threat? Why do some people silence, block and refuse to communicate those who ask for simple discussions? Why do some Associations and people decide to bully any female who dares to even raise a question - this is still happening!! I hope this day gives people a chance to reflect on why it matters. To give underrepresented players a chance to say why it matters. To give our allies a voice to support a drive for inclusivity and ask us questions as to why it matters. Let us also celebrate the recent changes that are happening. Whilst we still see too many events that are white male only, we are seeing a huge amount of events that are more diverse, Associations embracing new mission statements, brands being aware of all players within sponsorship and advertising.
