3 level inverter - What is it? Electric motors require voltage and current to create power. To create AC motor power from a DC source, such as a battery, you need an inverter. In a 2 level inverter, the voltage and current come from the DC-Link, and are either positive, or negative (think battery "+" or "-") In a 3 level inverter, there's also a mid-point to the DC-Link. Using this mid-point, there is more control over the motor current, by using the mid-point voltage which creates a mid-level current. The higher the voltage, the higher the current. Electrical current flowing causes heating, which is lost energy. With 3 levels (or more), there is less current flowing when it isn't needed, meaning less unwanted heating and losses. This makes the inverter more efficient, meaning more miles for the available stored energy. If you want to understand in more detail, just send me a DM and we can talk more 😊
