🌿 Disconnect to Reconnect This weekend the sun has come out and I am reminded of the value of stepping away from our screens and reconnecting with the real world—especially watching young leaders in action. 🚤 Evie took charge at the cadet training, demonstrating remarkable leadership by not only instructing young sailors but also planning engaging activities that honed their skills on the water. Briefing the cadets and leading fun, developmental games, followed by hands-on training out on the rib, fast a great break from GCSE revision. ⛵ Hugh is getting ready for a challenging sailing competition. Moving from single-handed to crewing a two-man boat, he’s a testament to adaptability and skill, demonstrating the breadth of his sailing skill and the spirit of teamwork. Playing football u different positions and handling wins and losses with grace teaches resilience and encouragement. And then there’s the joy of the simpler things—like playing with my Jonathan Compston’s dog. Watching my children excel and lead away from digital distractions is a joy. It's a powerful reminder of what we can learn and how we grow when we disconnect from devices and connect with life in real time. DARCEY BUSSELL LIMITED talked about “more technology, more physical offset” at BETT this year, and I absolutely agree. Hope you are all having a great weekend. #Leadership #FamilyTime #DigitalDetox #Sailing #YouthDevelopment

“Will you sign my hat please?” “Sure.” “Thank you!” This exchange happened over and over yesterday as my 4 year old waited patiently, yet confidently, as players finished their rounds and walked off the 18th green. Yesterday was also exciting to me because I got to experience Ethan’s first PGA Tour event alongside him. It was one more way for me to share my passion for golf with him. It was also a great learning opportunity as elite athletes treated the kids with dignity and respect. They took their time signing merchandise, taking pictures and even playing the classic game of rock, paper, scissors in exchange for a glove or ball. They asked kids’ names, ages, and favorite hobbies. They made them feel like they mattered, like they are important. Ethan can’t wait to go back. He also asked “Daddy, can we go to the dwiving (driving) wange (range) tomorrow?!” As professionals in our organizations, we can learn from this example. When we engage others and consistently be present with them, if only a few, yet meaningful seconds, we are potentially fanning a spark that can grow into an intense fire of ambition later on. Go find and nurture the tiny sparks in your life. A few years into our tenure as pit crew coaches in the Cup Series, a number of people within our company were frustrated because our race team couldn't seem to get over the hump and win. We were close to winning week in and week out, but just couldn't seem to get into victory lane. We were able to pinpoint two dominant attitudes: the feeling of complacency and the feeling of being cursed. As we discussed these attitudes with our boss, we thought: what if we reframed our mindset when we didn't win? Instead of viewing those races as failures, what if we focused on what we could learn from each race we didn't get the checkered flag? Our options were to win or to learn. It was clear that this should be the team mantra and that we ought to carry that mantra with us into every practice and every race weekend. We all loved this subtle mental switch so much that we created a banner to hang in the race shop with these three words: Win or learn. ### Teaching Your Kids Resilience: Compete, Don't Change the Rules 💯 In sports, and in life, it's all about learning to crush it within the existing rules, not changing them to make things easier. Take Caitlin Clark, for example. She's an amazing basketball player, but she's having a tough rookie season. Some experts are suggesting that the WNBA should "change the rules" to help her out. Instead of moving the goalposts, let’s teach resilience and perseverance. Caitlin's journey shows how important it is to adapt, improve, and compete within the framework we have. By tackling these challenges head-on, she can grow stronger, sharpen her skills, and become an even more awesome player. Encouraging kids to compete and excel within the current rules teaches them valuable lessons about hard work, determination, and fair play. Changing the rules might make things easier in the short term, but it misses the point of true competition and the growth that comes from overcoming obstacles. So, let's cheer on Caitlin and everyone facing adversity by encouraging them to rise to the challenge, embrace the grind, and aim for greatness within the rules. This way, we build not just better competitors, but also a winning mindset that works in all areas of life. #EmbraceTheChallenge #Resilience #Perseverance #Sportsmanship #LifeLessons #CaitlinClark #Leadership

How did Tom Brady make it 23 seasons as a professional athlete? 🏈 It wasn't by slacking off in training camp, eating whatever he wanted in the off season, or not investing in assessing and addressing his deficits. ❌ How did he get there? He started with a growth mindset, he maintained a set of beliefs and thoughts about how he was going to keep improving, and he was disciplined with both his mind and body.🧠 You must do the same. 🚀 And that's what we do at Tactical Longevity. 🔍 We capitalize on the research from sports psychology, the practices of the Navy Seals, and the ancient work of the Stoics to mold officers into people who can withstand the demands of the career. To do work many others can't (or won't) do. 💥 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dKHe7wyX #TomBrady #TacticalLongevity #Athlete

Mentoring the younger generation and guiding them towards a successful path is incredibly fulfilling. Sharing insights at the right moment can be a powerful gift, helping others to leverage opportunities and sidestep obstacles. In my sessions on teen mentorship, I use the Nike swoosh as a creative way to list my top 10 pieces of advice, framing it as "Just DON'T do it." I encourage parents to let their children participate in this learning experience or to pass along the concept, hoping it will make a meaningful impact in their lives. https://lnkd.in/eSFny4Zs

This past weekend I spent some time at the beach. Always good for the soul. For some reason I get happy when I see pelicans. They fascinate me. Seeing them in flight got me thinking about who leads and when. Their formations are intentional. During flight, an updraft is created by the upstroke of one bird's wing, and the following bird can take advantage of this wingtip vortex to save a significant amount of energy. That's why the bird in the front of the formation will switch places and allow another bird to take the lead when it gets tired. Some birds don't fly in the formation as tightly. I wonder if it is a lack of experience or if they just want their own space? Who knows? The bird in front doesn't sub-optimize the others by hanging on to the lead position too long out of fear of losing it or not being in control. I find that to be amazing on so many levels. So few of us are able to step aside for the betterment of those we are leading. The pelicans remind of a football players who take themselves out of the game after a long run or if they are hurt in a way that can compromise other's performance. So how comfortable are you letting someone else lead? Are you sure? #leadership #teamoptimization #performance #personaldevelopment

A lot of people see a baseball player perform on the field but, what happens when the lights are turned off and there is no spotlight on them? Learning life -skills is crucial for any baseball player and should start in the rookie stage as it prepares them for challenges beyond the field. These skills must include teamwork, communication, resilience, and time management, skills that will contribute to their personal growth and enhance their ability to navigate the complexities of a professional sports career. Additionally, life skills will aid players in building a foundation for post-athletic endeavors, fostering a well-rounded and adaptable approach to life. #Educationisthekey. #Lifeskills

True grit and character are qualities that are forged in adversity. My time in MCJROTC instilled these values in me and shaped me into the leader I am today. From achieving 22 pull-ups, running a 20-minute 3-mile, to completing 60 push-ups and 110 sit-ups in just 2 minutes, the physical and mental discipline was rigorous. Leading the drill team required memorizing 60 commands in freezing -20 degree weather. Despite the harsh outdoors, we excelled and filled up our trophy case with achievements. Training new cadets during summers and holidays meant more drills. Each challenge fortified my resilience and instilled virtues that many strive to develop throughout their lives. Now, with a nephew on the way, I'm training hard once again as if I’m 17. I train for as long as 3 hours straight, determined to set an example for him. I want to be someone he can look up to, and that is someone I can’t let down. #Leadership #Resilience #MCJROTC #MilitaryTraining #ProfessionalGrowth #TeamworkMakesTheDreamWork
