Who has held one of these positions before? If you are a part of a growing organization often there are no clear guidelines to what you do. You just do things and figure things out. As much as the owners, leaders and organization want to have structure within the company, if you are growing and acquiring sometimes there is no time for setting those boundaries. You will wear many hats. You will go out of the department you traditionally work in. You will be put in positions to...... Figure it out. Many people thrive and others don't. As I've launched Navarro Culinary Connections I feel sometime I am learning to ride a unicycle while juggling bowling pins on fire while playing the harmonica. You want people in your organization with a figure it out mentality, that can juggle bowling pins that are on fire. Starting, growing or being a part of a fast moving company means at times there are no answers, there is no job description and it really is, just figure it out. Those who attempt, do and find success will continue to find growth within the company. Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

As a leader, it's easy to fall into the trap of treating all employees the same. However, I've found that the key to success is recognizing that each employee is unique and requires an individualized approach. Over 20 years ago, I began managing employees and I quickly learned that they are the most important asset to mission success. In my current role as Chief of Police at VA Salt Lake City Health Care System and a Superintendent during my Air Force Security Forces career, my goal has always been to ensure that every employee feels valued and appreciated. During my tenure, I've had the honor of recognizing many of my star players, even during the COVID pandemic. One of the ways I prioritize my employees is by being personable with each and every one of them. I make sure to show that I care about them as fellow human beings, not just as workers. I understand that everyone has good days and bad days, and I believe that jumping straight to disciplinary action is not the solution. As a leader, I take the success of my employees personally and do whatever it takes for them to be successful. I always say, "I don't hire employees to fire them." By consistently prioritizing my employees and their well-being, I've seen a positive impact on morale and productivity. Ultimately, my focus is on doing everything I can to ensure my employees successfully complete the mission as expected.

I love GETTING to engage with those who genuinely and actively serve beyond themselves every day. You MATTER…You MAKE a Difference…You ARE the Difference to Others!
This week I got to travel, engage with and be inspired by several servant leaders from the City of Burleson and surrounding cities as well the Johnson County Special Utility District. We discussed several topics including Performance Management and Disciplinary Actions, Harrassment Prevention and Civility (Respect) in the Workplace. What I dig about each of these topics is that there is a tremendous opportunity for us to see that at the heart of our organizations are (believe it or not) people who want to and are making a difference. I shared my opinion that I believe jobs/positions (while stragically and intentionally created) are inert/dead…until a PERSON occupies it and breathes LIFE into it. The position descriptions are just words until a person brings them to life by seeing and understanding the impact that position makes both on the organization and those they serve. As Simon Sinek shares “If you hire people just because they can do a job, they’ll work for your money. But if you hire people who believe what you believe, they’ll work for you with blood and sweat and tears.” Wow!! What an opportunity we GET to have making a daily difference LIVING out/SEEing self in our organization’s mission, vision, and values. Characteristics for Success I was recently asked to provide a list of adjectives that others would use to describe me as it relates to my work as a city manager. This, of course caused me to think about the characteristics that help one succeed as a city or county manager. Acknowledging that such a list will differ from community to community, in general what characteristics do you associate most with successful managers? Here are five (plus two) I have come up with for starters: · Patient · Strategic · Decisive · Active Listener · Empathetic And a couple of extras – Adaptable and a Good Sense of Humor What would you add (or take away) from this list?

They leave managers.” 𝗕𝗨𝗧 for Chiefs of Staff, the stakes are even higher ⬆️ 💪🏼 The Chief of Staff to Principal relationship is unlike any other. It’s more than simply collaborating or following traditional reporting lines. 🤝🏼 It’s about true partnership, trust, and an alignment of vision. 𝗛𝗢𝗧 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘: That’s why, as a Chief of Staff, it’s 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 to enjoy working with your Principal than even being passionate about the product or industry. 👁️ You could love the company’s vision, but if you and your Principal don’t see eye to eye on how to implement that, the role will be a constant uphill battle. 🔎 Finding a Principal who 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 can make all the difference between thriving in your position or burning out. This may sound harsh to some but he does a great job articulating why treating your company like a sports team is both fairer & more honest than claiming to be like a family. A sports team is built with a clear goal in mind & each position requires the right person for the job. You have to earn your position but that doesn’t mean you’re chucked if you have one bad game. It’s the synergy & reliance on one other that makes your team what it is...and most importantly fun to play with! Top teams are characterized by a mutual admiration of other's skills, driven by an intrinsic desire to improve & a collective ambition for excellence. It’s simple - If your employees win, your company wins.
