"Should Educators Put Disclosures on Teaching Materials When They Use AI?" YES. Faculty and educators have a real opportunity to drive the narrative around generative AI use in all classrooms toward responsible and transparent use. Modeling openness for students will help demystify AI usage and help to reflect the real value and limit of AI in student work. I'm with Marc Watkins on this one. #academicintegrity #ai #transparency https://lnkd.in/eKEZGGNi

With the start of the new school year, administrators and teachers face new challenges, including AI. Equitable practices are on everyone’s minds. The question remains: How should we all harness AI in teaching and learning? Is it necessary and sufficient for educators to add a disclaimer such as: Written/graded in collaboration with artificial intelligence when using AI? What kind of disclaimer is needed for students? We must continue embracing AI in education and utilizing technological tools without sacrificing teaching. AI is a tool. Use it effectively as a supplement, not a substitute. I love the "back and forth" shared in this article on #AI in #HigherEd. Some important points: - Educators may choose to disclose use of AI not necessarily in "fairness" to the learner, but to normalize the legitimate and appropriate use of #AI in the creation of classroom materials - Disclosing use of #AI in #HigherEd may only be warranted until it becomes commonplace and openly accepted (which may only happen if it is disclosed regularly!) When students are surprised or upset that I use AI in the classroom, I normalize the fear of the new, and encourage education and practice with a new tool. Computers were new once, too, but I wouldn't want to write my dissertation with one!

I've been following several threads and articles on this topic for the last several week, and I love the question: Should instructors disclose their AI use to students? And if so...what does that look like? https://lnkd.in/g4x3nYA5

What do you think? Should educators put disclosures on teaching materials when they ise AI? Not an easy question! One can argue both ways! #ai #artificialintelligence #genai #generativeai #chatgpt #highered #education #teachers #students #technology
As more instructors experiment with using generative AI to make teaching materials, should they disclose that to students? If students are required to make clear when and how they’re using AI tools, should educators be too? “We need to be open and honest and transparent if we’re using AI,” says Marc Watkins, a lecturer of writing and rhetoric at the University of Mississippi and director of the university’s AI Summer Institute for Teachers of Writing. “I think it’s important to show them how to do this, and how to model this behavior going forward,” Watkins says. As #AI becomes more integrated into education, a debate is emerging on whether educators should disclose when they use AI tools. Some believe that disclosing AI use is akin to using a calculator and therefore not necessary. Others believe that disclosure is a must, especially in cases like assessment grading with AI. This article dives into the ethical implications, transparency, and trust issues at the core of this discussion. 🌐 Should students know if AI played a role in the creation of their #learning content? And how might this knowledge affect their trust in the material and the learning process? 💡 What do you think? Educators are continuously adapting to new technologies and learning how to make the best use of them to enhance the learning experience. However, as new AI tools have been introduced, educators face the challenge of adapting and deciding whether to integrate generative AI tools into their teaching. To have the most effective conversations regarding AI in the classroom, they should ideally be student-centered, transparent, and non-accusatory. Engaging in this discussion helps students foster critical thinking on when and where these tools might be appropriate, how they could be leveraged for out of class learning, and how to correctly cite AI tools.
