𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝘆𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 Are you aware of the Paal-Knorr reaction? This famous named reaction in organic chemistry was discovered 140 years back. In 1884, German scientists Carl Paal and Ludwig Knorr reported for the first time an acid-catalyzed cyclization reaction of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds to form 5-membered heterocycles. Initially, it was an efficient method to prepare valuable furans. Later it was adapted to generate corresponding thiophenes and pyrroles as well. A group from Poland recently published even a rapid, solvent-free microwave-assisted variation of the Paal-Knorr reaction to generate various dimethyl pyrroles as intermediates for porphyrin synthesis in almost quantitative yield.  Reference:  W. Dear followers, I am pleased to introduce you to our COST action, “FULLRECO4US - Cross Border Transfer and Development of Sustainable Resource Recovery Strategies Towards Zero Waste” COST Action 20133 FULLRECO4US which may be of interest to you. This initiative consists of four main working groups (WGs): WG1: Bioenergy recovery from waste WG2: Biochemical recovery from waste WG3: Biological extraction of food and feed from residues and waste WG4: Water and nutrient recovery from wastewater More than 600 active members from 44 countries worldwide are participating in this COST action, collaborating to achieve its goals. The outcomes of this action will not only contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals but also engage relevant governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, and environmentally conscious individuals to build consensus on waste recycling, recovery, and valorization strategies. As part of our efforts, we have organized several workshops and summer schools and supported PhD students and young researchers through Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) across Europe. These missions aim to strengthen networks by allowing individual scientists to visit institutions or laboratories in other COST countries to foster collaboration, learn new techniques, and gain access to instruments or methods not available at their home institutions.
