A commission in the Brazilian National Congress discussed the criminalization of same-sex marriage on the same day that the legislative body established the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Citizenship and LGBTI+ Rights. Our Gustavo Ribeiro reflects in Congresso em Foco on how these events show the important need to increase LGBT+ political representation: bit.ly/3ZEd29I Although 2022 witnessed the largest LGBT+ caucus elected to government in the history of Brazil, the attacks against LGBT+ citizens reveal that there is still much to be done to ensure that LGBT+ Brazilians have the rights and the power to influence decisions that affect their lives. The good news is that the Brazilian electorate increasingly understands the urgent need for representation. A survey we released in June showed that 63% of people interviewed in Brazil agree that a diversity of voices, including LGBT+ individuals, is an essential aspect of democracy: bit.ly/3OAYZN1

We are delighted to support the work of the newly formed AI Collective in Nigeria, which will coordinate research, innovation, and the governance and accountability of these technologies. The AI Collective will create a community of practice bringing together experts from civil society, academic, tech, and many other sectors to advance #AI in Nigeria and ensure it is safe, and used ethically, for the good of all. ➡ Read more about the Collective: https://lnkd.in/esiuCdzq ➡ Join the community: https://lnkd.in/eFcEKGna
Earlier today in Abuja, we formally launched the Nigeria AI Collective (backed by Luminate with $1.5m) - a community of practice bringing together expertise from civil society, academic, tech, and other sectors working together to advance Artificial Intelligence in Nigeria and ensure its safe and ethical use in society. It’s objectives include: * Knowledge Sharing and Collaboration * Policy Advocacy * Innovation and Research * Capacity Building * International Collaboration The Nigeria AI Collective reflects our unique and inclusive ecosystem approach towards developing and deploying AI in Nigeria for the greater good. It sets a standard for other countries looking to build capacity in AI for transformational change. This approach is similar to the one adopted for the development of our National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS) a few months ago, where we brought together 120 AI experts of Nigerian descent to develop the document which is currently in its stakeholder engagement phase. Three organisations will manage the AI Collective in collaboration with NCAIR Nigeria and NITDA Nigeria - Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University(LBS), DSNai - Data Science Nigeria (DSN), and Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) LBS will lead research activities and serve as research manager whilst providing training programs and nurturing talent; CJID will coordinate the Collective’s work around AI governance; while DSN will spearhead initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in AI. We are grateful for the support from our partners, particularly Luminate who are committing $1.5million to support Nigeria’s effort towards developing its AI ecosystem.

We're proud to partner with the Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundations, and the MacArthur Foundation in launching the West Africa Democracy Fund. This initiative aims to contribute to expanding the democratic and civic spaces in West Africa by strengthening opportunities for citizens’ voices to be included in defining the norms that define the governance of their countries. Technology is increasingly intertwined with democratic processes in Africa. While technology eases participation in democracy, it has been used to harm disadvantaged groups and exclude others from important democratic processes. Our contribution aims to support organisations and initiatives working at the intersection of tech accountability, digital governance, and democracy. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eqtWafwg
I am proud to announce the launch of the West Africa Democracy Fund, which, in partnership with Open Society Foundations, MacArthur Foundation, and Luminate, will direct $20M over three years into the region in support of efforts that reimagine, renew, and strengthen democracy in West Africa. I am grateful for the collaboration of our philanthropic, civil society, and government partners, as we support the people of West Africa as they work to strengthen the foundations of democracy and build a more resilient future. While democracy has its challenges, greater citizen participation in democratic processes is needed to fully realize a peaceful, inclusive democracy that empowers citizens to build a society that is more just, and that contributes to greater prosperity and a stable economy. Brazil’s digital environment is facing a critical challenge: a lack of transparency in social media data is hindering efforts to combat online toxicity, particularly against women in politics. Writing for our Women Leaders of Latin America series with El Pais, Bárbara Libório and Ana Carolina Araujo from our partner Instituto AzMina highlight how the closure of X's Brazil office and the blocking of CrowdTangle have created a "data blackout," making it nearly impossible to monitor and address digital gender-based violence. This opacity not only silences important voices but also threatens the diversity of political participation. As Brazil approaches municipal elections, it's crucial for tech companies, civil society, and government to collaborate on creating safer online spaces: "If nothing changes, institutional politics will continue to lose great female talents."

In a world where truth is increasingly under siege, we’re continuing to make bold choices to protect our shared reality. Our new $2 million grant to further support the International Fund for Public Interest Media will empower IFPIM to tackle the Goliath of our time: Big Tech's impact on the media landscape. IFPIM's work is critical in supporting media outlets in the Global South, where less than 10% of donor funds typically reaches. From Nicaragua to Nepal, public interest media outlets are fighting to survive – and this support offers a lifeline: it's a strategic investment in fostering independent media where quality journalism can thrive alongside technological innovation. As we navigate the waters of AI and digital disruption, initiatives like IFPIM are crucial in preserving the integrity of our information ecosystem.
