Interested in helping to shape the future of democracy? Then let's have a conversation! With half the world’s population going to the polls this year, it’s a critical time to think what democracy means. Influence and power are shifting to new actors, many of whom are undermining democracy, while at the same time using democratic structures to gain decades-long footholds in their countries. I’m launching a series of global dinners for democracy and a card game to ignite meaningful conversations – and I can’t do it on my own. Are you in? DM me and let’s talk. And in the meantime, here are some amazing democracy books you might want to dip into 😊

And it has the possibility to allow democracy in a far more efficient/widespread way.” In our webinar on digital democracy, we are presenting cases of e-democracy and showing the potential of e-participation mechanisms at EU level. We will also explore the role that civil society organisations can play. Belarus and Russia plan to combine their respective lists of ‘extremists’ and ‘extremist materials’ in a cross-border cooperation between the two states. These respective lists of ‘extremists’ are not who would typically fit the bill, rather anyone who speaks out against the current regime in either country can be added to the list and labeled an ‘extremist’. Once added to this list, individuals can be targeted and face prosecution and any extreme materials can be censored. With a combined 16,700 names between the two lists, this new operation can easily be seen for what it is - a method of allowing the allying countries to monitor, track and prosecute anyone with a contradicting voice to their own. This operation fundamentally acts to undermine the opposition and consolidate their repression. Dennis van de Laan delves further into this issue in today’s newsletter:
