This is not a post about golf. But on the professional tour there’s a guy called Tony Finau Tony’s a very good player. In fact, he’s unbelievable - look him up. Tony has never won a major. He’s currently 20th in the world. Since 2018, Tony has had a top 10 finish in 9 Majors (golf’s pinnacle events - think Grand Slams for tennis). There are only 4 majors each year. That means Tony Finau has a 37.5% ‘top 10 finish’ rate in golf’s toughest competitions over the past 6 years. Now you can see why I say he’s unbelievable. Tony has a son - Jraice. Jraice also plays golf. He’s still young but he is definitely on track to follow in his dad’s footsteps. Tony acts as Jraice’s caddy whenever he can, carrying around his golf bag during tournaments for him. Tony & his wife Alayna actually have 5 kids. Sometimes they feature on tv broadcasts of his events. Often he can’t bring them along to tournaments as they have their own schooling & routines etc. Tony has been quoted saying “I think the biggest challenge when I’m on the road is being away from my family” Tony is clearly a dedicated father & family man. But is family good for business? You try doing a solid days work with your family in tow. I’m certain that if Tony spent more time away from his family focusing on tweaking his game, he could come up with a major win. I’d even bet that if he was so laser focused on the goal of becoming world number 1, he could get there pretty quickly too. You can’t argue with this guys ability - clearly he’s got what it takes. But I think Tony makes an active choice. Sometimes he chooses work over his family, but sometimes he actively chooses family over work. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Is a king still a king when underground? As Mel Brooks said “It’s good to be the king.” But once you’re anointed and you’re looking around, what do you want to see? I think for Tony it’s important for him to have a good amount of professional success, but at the same time to be able to share in the enjoyment of that success with his family. Tony definitely has something I mentioned in my last post: an overarching life goal. I believe the key to success and happiness is balancing all aspects of my life in a way that is right for me and mine. Consulting my overarching life goal simplifies every decision I make. I simply check in with it and make sure that what I’m are weighing up will still keep me on the path to my life goal. Here’s a song on this topic I just released.
