Sharing from MBTA Advisory Board:
The #MBTA Advisory Board’s staff (Brian Kane, Hanna Switlekowski, MPA, and Isabella MacKinnon) visited the City of #Chelsea today to meet with city officials. We are visiting cities and towns across the region this autumn, to explain to elected officials the dire consequences if the T falls off the fiscal cliff early in 2025 due to its $700 million structural operating deficit, and multi-billion infrastrusture needs gap. Without substantial, recurring, and predictable additional revenue public transportation in and around #Boston is in real trouble.

Today, the King's Speech highlighted how planning reform will seek to accelerate the delivery of high-quality infrastructure and housing. Operations director, Gavin Mason, commented: "As expected, the King's Speech today highlighted the need for planning system reform, and for the proposed 'fast-track' system for developments aligned with national priorities like affordable housing and green infrastructure. These reforms hope to streamline approval processes, enabling quicker delivery of essential projects. "The emphasis on community involvement and stricter environmental standards resonates with our commitment to sustainable and community-focused development. Labour's plans to address housing supply imbalance by leveraging public land and collaborating with local authorities align perfectly with our vision to contribute to the UK's housing needs." "I have a dream" 🫂 🫂 🫂 to tackle the housing crisis, inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision: 1. Elevating the competence of senior bureaucrats beyond that of politicians. 2. Creating partnerships between governments, universities, unions, and associations. 3. Encouraging governments to adopt successful housing strategies of global successful experiments. 4. Capping taxes on gas and new housing developments, instead of collecting 42% from gas and 31% from new build housing. 5. Focusing on off-site and mass timber construction. 6. Boosting housing density a lot near public transportation. 7. Building satellite towns connected to cities by subways, instead of growing to be a mega cities. 8. Evolving high schools into polytechnical institutes and reevaluating immigration numbers at the same time. 9. Accelerating the permit and tenant dispute resolution processes. My fear is that without real commitment, this dream will not materialize, leading to a nightmare where governments only make lofty promises without quick and effective solutions. Do you ever wonder how co-operative organizations actually work in practice? At our 2024 Annual General Meeting, we interviewed four of our co-op members to learn more about the incredible work that they are doing in their communities. These interviews highlighted co-ops from diverse sectors and scales in BC's co-op movement. We learned from: 🏠 Thom Armstrong at the Co-operative Housing Federation of BC, 🛒 Taylor Hansen at the Aschroft Farmers and Artisans Co-op, 📸 Michelle Sadler at Stocksy, and 🌳 Katie Hill at the Harrop-Procter Community Forest Co-op. Whether it be providing stable employment, access to essential services, or space for community connection, we were so impressed to learn more about how each of these members are leveraging the co-operative model to best serve their members and communities. All four interviews are now available for viewing here: https://lnkd.in/gvNqRGkr #SustainableBusiness #cooperative #community #AffordableHousing

Could this be part of the ‘new dawn’ of planning? Clearly however planning does not only equal housing. Housing is of course important but more important is: 1) the national and regional infrastructure to generate and distribute enough power to where it is needed; 2) data centres to deliver the the fibre and processing capacity our daily lives require; and 3) clean water to drink and then not pollute our watercourses. Sir Starmer, Angela and Ed have started to unravel the current planning ‘Pickle’ and I hear that the draft revisions to the NPPF will be with us later THIS month. So it looks like our holiday reading may be how the ‘new dawn’ is facilitated in updated planning policy. Perhaps it’s time for a quick ice cream now before things ‘hot’ up? #planning #nppf #datacentres #datacenters #economicdevelopment #rtpi #infrastructure #spatialplanning #regionalplanning #strategicplanning #icecream #logistics #holidayreading #fun
Twenty years after her landmark Review of Housing Supply in the UK, Dame Kate Barker has written a public memorandum to the incoming Housing Minister, Matthew Pennycook MP, setting out the initial recommendations of the Radix Big Tent Housing Commission of which she is chair. Dame Barker recommends a two stage approach to housing reform, initially focusing on policies to end the ‘permacrisis’ by establishing a stable policy framework, so as to allow bolder choices in the latter part of the Government’s first term and lay a sound foundation for the following five years. The memo goes on to make eighteen initial recommendations, covering planning, funding, and implementation.
