Longbow Research published a short note today covering the February release on contract awards from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) which showed continuing growth in public construction awards for highways and bridges. With strong funding from various governmental agencies, this sector appears poised to continue at above historical levels of growth through 2024/25. #constructionmaterials #publicnonresidentialconstruction

Another down month for Dodge Construction Network starts. Not surprisingly the weakness was in commercial, manufacturing, and multifamily. Single family, roads/bridges and healthcare all did quite well. We're not likely to see interest rates move lower until much later in the year, which should continue to put strain on commercial and multifamily starts. #construction
“The construction sector hit a soft patch to start 2024,” said Richard Branch, chief economist for Dodge Construction Network. “However, this is not overly surprising given high rates and restrictive credit." Tune in to hear more from Richard Branch on March's #construction starts.

Bridge update: No company submitted a bid to build the new Washington Bridge. None. This project, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, did not attract any bids from bridge construction companies. As we've discussed, the RFP placed a substantial amount of risk on the winning bidder, making the project financially unattractive. There will be many months of additional delay before we get a new bridge because the Rhode Island Department of Transportation has to create a new RFP that addresses the risks and lack of information that doomed the first RFP. The Rhode Island DOT’s lack of professionalism hurts all Rhode Islanders. It is bad enough that the DOT did not properly maintain the bridge or proactively determine it was failing. Now, we pay the price because the DOT put together an RFP that was so deficient that no one would bid on it. For the DOT apologists who claimed that cleaning house at the DOT would imperil the bridge rebuild project, you could not have been more wrong. We have jeopardized the bridge rebuild project by keeping the inept DOT management in place. It is time for Governor McKee to lead. Clean up the DOT – now. This is all on you, Dan. No one in DOT management should keep their jobs. No one. #ri_bridge_debacle

Construction starts ended the year on a positive note,” said Richard Branch, chief economist for Dodge Construction Network. “The planning queue is stabilizing, and the promise of lower rates should spur construction onward. While hurdles remain, including scarce labor and tight credit, 2024 should be a more positive year for the construction sector." Read more here: https://hubs.li/Q02hfkPv0

In this article, Chris Dickson, CMS, explains how the recent court case decision confirms the previous finding that the payment terms linking the final payment date to an invoice are not in line with the UK Construction Act. Following the UK decision in Rochford Construction Ltd v. Kilhan Construction Ltd [2020], the October 2020 amendments to the Y(UK)2 clause in NEC4 Professional Service Contract (PSC), Term Service Contract (TSC) and Design Build and Operate Contract (DBOC), address this issue to ensure they no longer linked final dates for payment to submission of an invoice. Georgia DOT puts focus on resurfacing, safety improvements ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Transportation granted six projects, encompassing resurfacing, safety improvements, construction work, and bridge construction, in March. The largest single investment, valued at approximately $16 million, is allocated to a bridge construction project covering 0.653 miles and involving the construction of two bridges and approaches. This project spans State Route 83 over Lee Creek and over the Ocmulgee River in Jasper and Monroe counties. The second-largest bridge construction investment, worth approximately $1.3 million, consists of constructing 0.155 miles of a bridge and approaches on Robertson Bridge Road over Barber Creek in Barrow County. These contracts represent 72% of the total award amount. Approximately $2 million of the total awarded projects are designated for safety projects. The largest investment within these projects involves safety upgrades at the crossing of County Road 271/Tift College Drive at Norfolk Southern Railway. These upgrades include the installation of railroad warning devices, surface improvements to a full-depth rubber crossing surface and paving the approaches to the crossing along Tift College Drive to improve the crossing profile. Additionally, there are surface improvements at SR 42/North Lee Street at Norfolk Southern Railway to a full-depth rubber crossing surface in Monroe County. These contracts represent 8% of the total award. #transportation #GDOT #georgia #atlanta

I love seeing this! Alternative delivery methods are the future! The traditional bid-build system for the Department of Transportation is outdated and causes more issues than it prevents in the long run. #construction #alternativedelivery #DOT #bidbuild

Its been a while since I testified in front of a legislative body, but I was excited to be able to do so last week with my colleague Ural Yal on behalf of Turner Construction Company and Flatiron Construction before the NYS Assembly on why allowing alternative delivery methods such as Progressive Design Build and CM-Build is good for City and State agencies. Thanks to #nyslocalgovernmentprocurementcommittee for the opportunity. #turnernewyork #womeninconstruction
