Meharry School of Global Health and the great Daniel Dawes just released a report on the cost and economic impact of mental inequities. Mental health is clearly a crisis throughout the nation and for all communities. More attention and resources are needed to address this for all affected. The report highlights that the people of of color and those with the lowest incomes face the greatest burden of disease without access to the conditions and care that are needed - and at great cost, both human and economic. Today marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Week. The theme this year is community, which the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand says is the key to getting through tough times. Building a community for cancer patients is at the core of what we do at the Cancer Society. That's why we facilitate some 33 support groups across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, reaching patients from Kawerau to Katikati, Te Aroha to Taupō. These groups provide a safe place for people to ask questions, exchange stories, and have a laugh over shared experiences. Some of the participants are newly diagnosed and going through active treatment, while others have entered survivorship and return because of the friendships and ongoing support these groups provide. The reality is that not everyone has someone in their corner, and that's when we hear of our nurses making the biggest impact. With so many of our clients living in isolated areas, having someone pop around for a chat can be like a lifeline when someone is feeling unsure and alone. Our nurses can help allay fears, answer questions, advocate, and raise the alarm bell on issues that may otherwise go unnoticed. Our nurses and support groups help to build up a person's kete so they can access services and support with the knowledge that they are not alone. Depression is a leading mental health concern in men, however, less than half of affected men seek professional help. For men who do, services often don't meet their needs, and 'dropout' rates are usually higher than women. University of Newcastle and HMRI Active Living and Learning researchers led by Dr Myles Young are exploring innovative ways to improve therapy for men through a clinical trial that takes therapy to the great outdoors. This study will compare conventional indoor therapy to 'walk-and-talk' therapy, aiming to create a more engaging and less pressured environment for men and leverage the benefits of physical activity and exposure to nature.
