I'm always going to be that voice in your ear, telling you to make your mark in the GBS world. Sure, you can ignore me. No one's forcing you to act. While it's easy to get caught up in day-to-day operations, never forget the bigger picture. For every 9 leaders who shake their heads and say, "too hard," there's that 1 leader who embraces the challenge and turns things around. And guess what? They're the ones who send me those uplifting messages, thrilled about their newfound success. Being a GBS Leader isn't just a title; it's an opportunity. You can: - Scale up your business like never before. - Create a working environment that people dream about. - Focused on making it a smoothly-running, efficient hub? Go for it. How personal preferences can play a role in GBS: A decision has been made. IT support for the entire group will be delivered from a Shared Services Center. The only question is, from which location? The business case paints a clear picture: additional available office space on our India site offers good quality facilities at a good price. Nonetheless, the CIO chooses a partner in Singapore. Through the grapevines, I am told that the location in India never had a chance. Why? Because the CIO simply does not like the country. Too hot, too dusty, too much traffic. He much prefers flying out to Singapore twice a year. Mind you, that personal choice resulted in twice the cost for the company, compared to the option in India. I am experiencing similar tendencies in my new role at the Friedhelm Loh Group. We are about to begin an assessment of various service delivery models for our GBS, such as SSC, outsourcing or a hybrid solution. I have already “collected” several different locations that colleagues have whispered to me as their favourites…

The introduction of a GBS organization is a smart move, according to senior management in the company: the new unit will take away all boring tasks from employees in the retained organization, so they can concentrate on strategic, essential activities. What decision makers often do not consider is that many employees do not want to hand over their "dull" administrative tasks to another unit at all! Most people cannot concentrate on demanding tasks for eight or more hours a day. From their point of view, a mix of sophisticated and lighter tasks is ideal to get by and keep the quality of work constantly at high levels. Furthermore, most “sending units” – such as Finance, HR and IT – are quite concerned about loss of power when they transfer a good part of their activities into another unit within the organization. At my new employer, we are taking a different approach: the functions in scope are moving into GBS with all their activities ranging from business partnering and specialized tasks to transactional repetitive processes. The functional owners will be running these operations, while the transformation team will drive cross-functional coordination, automation and digitalization. It is a fresh avenue with the intention of minimizing problematic interface dramas!

As part of ServiceNow's Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I had an opportunity to reflect on childhood trips back to Malaysia, and how they shaped me as a person. There are fond memories of delicious food and and precious family holidays, but also a deeper appreciation of the sacrifices made by previous generations in migrating from China to Malaysia, then to Australia. Today marks the last day of March which has been a special time for me dedicated not only to #personalandprofessionaldevelopment activities but also for keeping #worklifebalance and recharging the batteries before moving on with a new opportunity which starts on April (stay tuned 😉). On this occasion, I want to thank my colleagues from GFT Technologies for these last 2 years and all these experiences we have shared together full of unforgettable memories 😊 Here are some stats that I’ve managed to collate during this month both from professional and personal perspective 💪 : 1. Attended 2 online HR conferences. 2. Took part in 1 meet up dedicated to DEI in person. 3. Completed 1 certification course from Agile HR (details to be shared soon). 4. Completed 30+ hours of various online trainings, webinars and podcasts. 5. Visited 8 different exhibitions in Warsaw museums. 6. Watched 10 movies in the cinema. 7. Walked 15378 steps on average every day (at least half of them did with this cute guy from the picture during our walks 🐶). Porto is thriving as an international hub. More companies are choosing the city to open new offices. Emergia Contact Center chooses Porto to open its first contact center in Portugal. The company's CEO, Loly Marín, emphasized Porto's strategic location as a gateway to key markets, serving as a bridge to Portuguese-speaking markets. Nagarro, a multinational technology and business consultancy firm, has also started offering services from Porto. Specializing in computer programming, the company operates in 36 countries and has around 19,000 employees. TSBetc, a Brazilian marketing agency, has chosen Porto to open a new office. CEO Renato Amaral states, that the goal is to bring TSBetc's expertise in tradeshows, events, conventions, incentives, logistics, and brand activations to the Portuguese market.
