What do you look for when hiring in Children's residential? 🤔 As a recruiter within the social care sector, I engage with children's residential organisations daily, to discuss what they look for in a candidate. Beyond the essential qualifications and experience, empathy stands as a pivotal attribute. The ability to understand and share the emotions of others can elevate a competent carer to greatness, particularly when working with vulnerable children. 🌟 Individuals who are dependable in managing routine care, behaviour management, and safeguarding, as well as those who can collaborate seamlessly with the entire team are just some of the crucial attributes we look for. 🌍 Social care thrives on collaboration, and adaptability is vital for effectively handling crisis intervention and case management. 🔄 What are your thoughts? What might be a deciding factor when deciding between 2 individuals as good as the other on paper? 👇 #socialcare #hiring #teamwork #empathy #recruitment #childrensservices #vulnerablechildren #careersinhealthcare #jobsearch #communitysupport #socialwork

It's #HiringMistakesMonday - a friendly reminder of the pitfalls to avoid when bringing on a new nanny or caregiver. One of the biggest hiring mistakes families can make is neglecting to conduct rigorous vetting and background checks. Skipping comprehensive interviews, reference checks, and screenings puts your children at serious risk of being entrusted to unqualified or unsuitable caregivers. While the process may seem time-consuming, taking the time to vet candidates thoroughly is crucial for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of your little ones. This includes: ✅ In-depth interviews covering experience, approach to discipline, emergency protocols, and more ✅ Contacting multiple references - not just the ones provided ✅ Verifying credentials, certifications, and conducting criminal background checks Hiring the right caregiver is one of the most important decisions a family can make. Don't leave anything to chance - make sure you're entrusting your children to someone you can truly rely on. Reach out to the Hello, Nanny team if you need guidance on best practices for vetting nannies and caregivers. We're here to help give your family the peace of mind you deserve. #nannyhiring #familysafety #childcaretips

JOB APPLICATION QUESTIONS Why do some companies have application forms on their websites asking questions such as: 1. Ethnicity 2. Religion 3. Sexual orientation 4. Sex/Gender identity 5. Age 6. Marital status? It's a genuine question and I'd be interested to hear the reasoning. It just seems that some applications are incredibly simple and non-intrusive and others are ridiculously complex and too personal. I understand that companies are looking to increase diversity but surely the danger is that positive discrimination can result or excellent candidates just choose not to apply. Can anyone think why a company should need a National Insurance number at application stage? I can't! I came across that question whilst I was completing a job application today - do they want to steal my identity? #opentowork #jobapplications

I’ve interviewed, a lot, in the past two years and these statements continue to happen. I know I’ve been taken off the candidate list for asking questions the way recruiters ask questions: - So, what have you all been doing with this role being vacant for so long? - Can you tell me what programs have been run and what activities you’ve been pursuing for staff without someone in the role? - Tell me more about an intern launching an Onboarding (or Leadership) program and what methodologies have been used to create the program. Employers like it about as much as job seekers. Looking for a job takes a lot of time and it is stressful and disheartening and demoralizing at times. Recruiters need so much more training than they are getting.
I had an interview with a foreign-based recruiter today. He asked me “what have you been doing for the last eight months?” I replied, “I’ve been looking for a job.” “But what have you been DOING? Working part-time or?” he asked. “No, applying to jobs” I responded. He encouraged me to change my resume to reflect continous employment for my latest employer to fill the gap. He couldn’t understand. I wondered if I should explain that I was laid off during maternity leave. That due to a lack of employment I don’t pay for daycare, so I’m a full-time stay at home solo parent. In the last year I have raised a human from zero to toddlerhood, all while applying to hundreds of jobs. I’ve been doing a lot. Still doing a lot, and still hopeful to begin working full-time again, and enroll my toddler in a local daycare while they still have a spot open for the fall. Hopeful that it will happen soon!

However, the staffing crisis doesn't really need to be as difficult as it is. Think about where you started from. Who gave you, your first opportunity❓ What an amazing place to be in when you can now give other's an opportunity when you spot potential and valuable skills. New recruits should show-up with energy, passion, motivation, a keen appetite to learn and to get stuck in. They should have a natural ability to connect with young people. They should want to get the best outcomes for them. This job role isn't for everyone. it takes special people with special abilities to make a difference and transform lives. Just because a candidate has experience or the qualification doesn't make them automatically right for the role or for the young people who are in your care.
