Had an inspiring day attending the masterclass 'The Resilient Tribe' led by two top women speakers Jitske Kramer and Elke Geraerts. It combined neuroscience and anthropology to help us navigate through these liminal times. Liminal means the in-between time between the old world that doesn't exist anymore and the new one that still has to be formed. According to the speakers, three big steps will happen at those moments: Separation, Transition, and Integration. Rituals can help us go through these different phases. The right mindset is crucial to get out of the status quo and start experimenting with small actions to shape the 'new.' #Topspeakers #ResilientTribe

When Hollywood connects with the science community, storytelling expands. Dr. Erica Cartmill shares her research with entertainment industry insiders. She's Professor of Anthropology, Cognitive Science, and Animal Behavior at Indiana University Bloomington. Alene Dawson recently highlighted Dr. Cartmill and the work of the Science & Entertainment Exchange. Dr. Cartmill shared: “One of the things that I find very exciting about interacting with this entertainment community is that those are the people who are changing the minds of everyone else on the planet." “We can be doing the science, but a small number of people are going to read scientific articles that I publish... So, if some of the science we’re doing can inspire some of the artworks, films and shows and music that people in that room are producing, that’s incredibly exciting, but also humbling.” While "referencing different bodies, social structures, interactions, cultures, ways of thinking and engaging with the world", Dr. Cartmill added: “Filmmakers can give people opportunities to really put themselves in the shoes of a creature that’s very different from ourselves." Listening, empathy, diversity of view, immersion, lateral vision, and looking for the silent evidence. These are all parts of the bigger muscle needed to operate in the business world more effectively. I rarely make book recommendations, but there are a few examples that provide a fascinating take on the aforementioned themes. If you’re looking for an introduction or a reminder, check out ‘Anthro-Vision’ by Gillian Tett. It tells the story of learning about people and behaviors from an anthropological and ethnographic point of view. The most commendable aspect is the plethora of case studies from the worlds of anthropology, journalism, and business. There is also a historical take and a sober, grounded reflection on the future. A precious highlight is the reminder of the cycles of fascination with the study of humans, followed by moments of forgetfulness that push us back from the progress we've made in business or our careers. I appreciate that Gillian Tett reminds us that studying behavior is not a one-time fling, but an everyday effort.
