It’s biscuits, with 14% share followed by deodorants at 7% ! 146 brands advertised during the ICC T20 World Cup, 83% higher number that last T20 WC edition. 77 categories of products were advertised, 67% higher than last year. (Source : TAM MEDIA AdEx report, ET) Why so ? Cricket is a perfect sport for advertising. There are enough breaks, between overs, between wickets, drinks, injury, bat change, glove change, helmet, and now DRS. Surfaces for branding keep going up with numerous brands on T-shirts, ground, boundary wall, stadium, bat and so on. It’s perhaps the only sport where a critical part of the ground, the boundary rope, has been changed to a shape so that it can have branding. People are so crazy about cricket that videos of people seeing cricket on TV also go viral. Clearly shows that it’s a winner takes all kind of market in India when it comes to advertising in sports. If other sports get elements such as enough breaks, slow pace, drama, heroism… they may see some success in popularity hopefully, what do you think ?

What do Sumo wrestlers eat? How many calories does a sumo wrestler consume in one day? A typical sumo wrestler eats a daily diet of 10,000 upwards. The recommended daily intake for a healthy, active male is 2,500. They eat more than 4 times what normal male eats and all of its done in two massive meals (lunch and dinner). Chanko-nabe (stew) is the main food consumed by sumo wrestlers. The base is dashi, the broth made with seaweed and bonito flakes that is a cornerstone of Japanese cooking. Miso, garlic, and mirin are added next. The stew’s main ingredients are a ton of proteins (chicken, beef, fish or tofu) and vegetables (cabbage, potatoes, mushrooms, bok choy and radishes). The recipe is tweaked during tournament season. Chanko-nabe is made exclusively with chicken, the idea being that sumo wrestlers should always be on two legs like a chicken, not all fours. Sumo wrestlers are remarkably fit, thanks to rigorous exercise and an enigmatic dietary regime. They exercise on an empty stomach from early morning and have two meals per day – a main meal at noon and an evening meal. Following the large mid-day meal, the sumo wrestlers take a long, well-deserved nap to keep on the fat. The sport of sumo contains many Shinto religious traditions and rituals and is a must for visitors. Next time you are in Japan, I hope you will have the opportunity to experience this national sport of Japan and the oldest organised sport in the world. Happy Easter to all! #sumo #JapanTravel #JapanUnmasked
