If you read or hear about a simple solution to our electricity system needs, you’re not being given the whole story. Electrification is the goal and there is a strategy to get there as efficiently and cleanly as possible while also considering important variables around cost and reliability. We need to continue to leverage diversity in technologies as we always have in Ontario or else we will never solve the Rubik’s cube.

Great piece today in the Toronto Star from Lesley Gallinger, President and CEO of Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). As we build out our clean, reliable and affordable electricity system, it breaks down the critical - and often unappreciated role - that natural gas generation plays in our grid, keeping the lights on as new clean generation and storage comes online. As Lesley says "this transition is like solving a Rubik’s Cube. We have a complex, multi-dimensional puzzle to tackle and must align all sides to ensure a reliable, affordable and sustainable end state for Ontario’s electricity system." Over the past two years, we've announced significant new initiatives, including the largest clean energy storage procurement in Canada's history, a $342 million expansion of energy efficiency, a new electricity trade agreement with Quebec and new nuclear projects including the G7's first grid-scale SMR. California officials have garnered criticism in recent months over their decisions to prolong the lifespans of natural gas and nuclear facilities despite the state’s pledges to shift to cleaner energy. Lawmakers have argued the moves are part of a critical balancing act between California’s ambitious renewable energy goals and the need to keep homes heated and powered. California has one of the largest capacities( in terms of GW's) of Renewable Projects active in the state and some argue they could sustainably power homes and businesses with just that infrastructure. Unfortunately dues to many factors such as generation and the actual transmission of that clean energy, it cannot reach everyone in the state and would possibly lower quality of life for residents. I want renewable sources of energy to be our only source in the future, but this transition, be it across a state or nationwide, is going to take some time, and people are going to need to prepare for it as much as governments. #renewableenergy #solar #nuclearenergy #windenergy #solarenergy #development #transmission

A combination of the decommissioning of ageing power stations, delays in the Hinkley Point C nuclear reactor’s completion, and the extra demand that electric vehicles and heat pumps will put on the grid are expected to leave the UK with an energy shortfall which will peak at 7.5GW in 2028, according to a Public First report released yesterday. Given that an estimated 1.35TWh of wind power is reported to have been wasted in 4 months (according to a 2023 Stonehaven report), we are confident that LDES could provide much of the dispatchable capacity required to bridge this gap. In fact, the report reinforces the fact that ”dispatchable and baseload capacity are critical for maintaining energy security” and calls for policymakers to “enable the business model for investing in long-duration energy storage (LDES).” Given the long lead times of projects of this scale and the looming deadline to increase green energy capacity, the urgency for regulatory reforms which will promote investor confidence and unlock public funding is more evident than ever. #enablingrenewables #LDES https://lnkd.in/eV-FTbtA

Insightful story in The New York Times on the missing piece in the energy transition: Storage. On April 30, for a portion of the day, batteries supplied more than one-fifth of California’s electricity and, for a few minutes, pumped out 7,046 megawatts of electricity, akin to the output from seven large nuclear reactors.
