A Gestalt short film about cells This old video is my first project ever with After Effects, and for me it's sweet how the video gets progressively better during the view, because I was still learning the basic gestures of the software🫀 #motiongraphic #graphicdesign #aftereffect

Two Aussie lads dressed as chickens walk into a pub… 🐔🃏 Our Visualisation Supervisor, Martin X. Bell shares how he tested his short film ‘Giblets’ on our motion capture stage with #productionvisualisation techniques. With this technology, he could establish camera shots and explore how characters might move and interact with their environment–– all in realtime, without ever leaving the studio. Martin is currently crowdfunding to get the shoot over the line. ‘Strangest Things’ Project - Part 2 How do you make a shot fit seamlessly into the world of Stranger Things? In Part 1, we explored the technical and creative challenges of this project. I purposely chose this plate because I knew it would be an interesting process. But making the shot work goes beyond the technical—the story determines whether a shot becomes memorable. While I’ll dive deeper into the technical aspects in another part, I want to focus on the story today. At Alpha Chromatica, we don't just create shots—we question them. We think cinematically. Why would a director focus on the center screen in this shot? We don’t know for sure yet, but if the character is moving frantically across the frame, there’s something at stake. The screen should be the focal point, driving the story forward. In this context, we could either resolve a conflict or build suspense by raising the stakes. Considering the shot’s mood—dramatic lighting shifts, intense camera movement, and glitching effects—I chose to heighten the suspense. Comping in a threat on the screen made perfect sense to amplify the tension. Why the Stranger Things universe? It’s not just because it’s a popular show. While analyzing the plate, I realized the threat on the screen should fit with the on-set props. After some research, I noticed the scene features objects from World War II, particularly two different types of oscilloscopes. I also saw 1980s-era TVs—specifically, a Sony Trinitron KV-5000—and the actor is dressed in winter clothes. All of this fits perfectly with the 1980s, cold, eerie setting of Stranger Things. That’s when the Stranger Things Season 4 jail breakout sequence came to mind—it was the ideal fit for this shot. Going even further, the Sony Trinitron on the left side of the screen has two unique lights that turn on when the TV powers up. Adding those lights in comp felt right—it grounded the shot in authenticity. On the right side, the oscilloscope’s voltage amplitude and frequency gradually increase throughout the shot, symbolizing the growing danger. So after being branded the Video Magician by May King Tsang I'd thought I'd share some more video tips for simple visual effects. This is one of the simple things that maybe everyone else picks up straight away, but took me a while to understand. While most people know you can add the transition effects to video clips, in Davinci Resolve at least, you can also apply them to the Text effects as well. Below is an example which is three Text effects with transitions between them (Circle Spin, Crash Zoom and Warp at the end). While there's a huge number of other ways to animate text, this one gives a really quick-to-achieve effect.

When I first got my hands on the script for messages, I knew the main thing I had to do was establish this sense of unease that was present throughout. There are numerous ways of doing this but one I like to go to is music and post production. In regard to music, thankfully I knew Jay from working on a live concert series and knew his style of ambient music would really go a long way into helping establish tone. Whenever I’m running point on a project, I’m really keen on collaboration and very quickly myself, Nat & Jay found a winning formula. In regard to VFX, one way we I found to help create this sense of unease was to abuse the warp stabiliser tool in Premiere pro. Normally, this tool is used to smooth footage but when abused creates a good amount of distortion and warping. When combined with the score makes for unease and discomfort.

🎥 Quick Tip: Boost Your Footage’s Dynamic Range Struggling to balance highlights and shadows in your video? Dynamic range can make or break your shot, but there's a simple way to enhance it in post-production. Jonny Elwyn recommends diving into the Lumetri Color panel in Adobe Premiere Pro. By carefully adjusting the Highlights and Shadows sliders, you can pull out hidden details in both bright and dark areas, giving your footage a more polished, cinematic feel. This technique ensures your videos look professional without the risk of overexposing or underexposing. It's a small tweak that can have a big impact on your final product.
