I needed a break yesterday ... so, of course, I went to see #KingdomOfThePlanetofTheApes (which is the longest title ever!). I was blown away by the use of technology in the film. It's a fantastic example of how AI is improving the tools that digital artists and filmmakers can use to create realistic environments that seamlessly blend with real world settings. And, yes, I had to do a review! I looked on IMDb.com to see who worked on the film, figured out what kind of work they do, and made some assumptions as to how those companies probably used their tech to make this movie magic. Everyone likes to talk about what AI can do. Here's a great video breaking down exactly what AI can't do from a design perspective. A great example is asking AI to design a transformer that can actually transform. In the end, even with AI you need someone with design experience and taste to get it to all come together.

I started writing this as a think piece but I’m not a writer so lol, follow my rabbit hole for a second… 1. Fact: anything Ai generated post the first 3 seconds takes you to a dark place. Something so creepy about merging worlds, oh and that face morph 😂 Creeee-py 2. Fear is the biggest motivators especially of curiosity- that’s why people always die in horror movies 3. The human condition is the creative’s bread and butter, particularly the darker side of it 4. Horror might be the best genre 5. The montage scene from ‘Talk to me’ is a study bookmark, but again then shoutout to the composing (That lady in the corner without limbs still haunts me) 6. Does the matter of the collective unconscious differ culturally, relating somewhat loosely to the idea of epigenetics? 7. Blade Runner 2049 is an unfinished project, I am convinced 8. The Sopranos is some of television’s best work 9. In final thoughts, Ai is creepy but really cool, I think that’s how we will always be able to tell the difference. It’s beginning…. Here comes Ai… This is a horror short that was shot live action, but all of the VFX are Ai generated. …and it’s not bad. I’ve said this before on here and I’ll say it again. Ai needs to be regulated if the film industry wants to remain stable and competitive. I’m all for innovation and moving forward with efficient technology, but we have to keep filmmakers and storytellers making films and writing stories. I like this short because it blends both physical live-action shooting with ai generated graphics and VFX. Soon enough it’ll be easier just to have the whole bag of chips be ai and the filmmaker would have to choose between making a film good and fast but not authentic, or good and slow but real. What’re your thoughts? How far should we let Ai into our workflow as filmmakers?
