It's project Feature Friday! Today we highlight the new South County Recycling and Transfer Station, a project for King County in Algona currently underway and scheduled for completion in 2026. With a design by HDR, our team is constructing new transfer, administration, waste, operations, and scale house structures on 18.9 acres. Part of the work has included relocating a stream that runs through the site, which was completed during a short window of time to ensure no adverse environmental effects to spawning salmon. The project is aiming to achieve Living Building Challenge Petal certification. Recently, our team completed a training session with YouthBuild for pre-apprentice construction workers on how to "hustle work" in the industry. The session included our 200th trainee, a huge accomplishment for our Diversity & Inclusion team. Congrats to all on this accomplishment, and on all the community- and environment-focused work being done on site!

💭 It's day 4 of #ScotAppWeek24 and today we are looking at the impact work taster events can have on capturing the imagination of students and young professionals by showcasing that the construction industry can provide a fun, dynamic, innovative and rewarding career for them. 👏🏻 A recent example of this saw more than 200 young adults from across Scotland attended a two-day work taster event. Organised by SCAPE Scotland, its delivery partners and some of the UK’s leading construction and consultant companies, the ‘SCAPEing Out a World of Work Tasters’ event provided students with a hand-on experience of the industry. 👷🏾♂️ The event proved a great success with 74% of students now likely to consider a career in construction as well as an increase in knowledge on the various jobs and pathways available. What has also been encouraging to see, is the impact the event has continued to have in the days and months that followed with numerous school and site visits and career opportunities arranged as a direct result. 🙏🏽 Finally, only by true collaboration can the inherent challenges that exist within the construction industry be identified and challenged. This event proved just this, with SCAPE's delivery partners joining with some of the UK’s most influential construction and consultant firms, for the greater good. A few ago, I was frustrated and angry and I was bent on having things my way. When I was time for me to get into a tertiary institution, I wanted to attend a prestigious university, because growing up we were made to believe that going to a university was better than attending a Polytechnic, a College of Education and or a Technical College. We were taught albeit subtly that it came with a lot of prestige, a better academic environment and gave one better positioning to make it in life, so when I was forced to pick up the enrolment form in a College of Education, I felt that my life had needed and that I was hated deeply. I devised a means to get what I wanted but all my attempts proved abortive for two ways - I wasted my personal money, lost time and lost zest for school. One day, I had a heart-to-heart conversation with my sweet mother, it included some tears, profuse begging, and a call to remember that a bird in hand is worth more than two in the bush, that conversation encouraged me to pick up that form and that was how my four-year-old journey in College of Education Port Harcourt, now IAUE started. It has been a while after my graduation, but I am glad I passed through that system because the raw materials I got from my four years in COE has greatly helped me in building my Edtech company, The Stillwaters Spring Academy : an online school where you can learn soft skills and intrapersonal skills. More updates to come in #RoadToStillwaters 💃💃💃 PS. As I get closer to the launch of Stillwaters, I am making a decision to see how much I can build the rest of the company in public, so I am building, documenting and sharing lessons and my experiences so far in what I have called #RoadToStillwaters. The best investment is the investment you make in your personal development.

In partnership with the Forestry Skills Forum, the Training and Standards Sub Committee of NCFed has just provided a detailed consultation response to the call for evidence from the House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee. The call for evidence by the House of Lords relates to its new inquiry (launched in April) into the skills the UK economy needs for the future, focusing in particular on apprenticeships and in-work training. One of the main points we emphasised was that forestry is a broad church and any measures or initiatives need to be mindful of and cater for the various specific specialisms, subsectors, and technical areas within forestry and related disciplines; from the traditional (e.g. coppicing) to the contemporary (e.g. remote sensing). To not do so would be to the detriment of a vibrant and effective forestry sector. There will be an ongoing opportunity to feed into this work as it progresses and we will provide future updates. https://lnkd.in/egtnUAqT

President and Founder of Build A Dream | Leader | Speaker | Harnessing the Power of the Diverse Workforce.
I'm thrilled to respond to the media coverage surrounding the recent announcement from Build a Dream, the organization I am proud to be a part of. Announcements like this hold significant importance for several reasons: 1️⃣ They highlight the power of partnerships with industry, unions, colleges, and community organizations that are dedicated to supporting members from equity deserving groups, just like Build a Dream. These collaborations are crucial in creating a more inclusive and diverse workforce. 2️⃣ We have the opportunity to challenge and change the narrative around women and work. It's time to debunk the outdated notion that "women don't apply" or "aren't interested in the skilled trades." The truth is, women are more than capable and eager to contribute to these fields. What we need are purposeful, intentional, and targeted recruitment efforts to bridge the gap. 3️⃣ It's essential to acknowledge the barriers that exist and to think outside of the box to create initiatives that work. We must be willing to change our approach and explore innovative solutions. By doing so, we can break down barriers and create meaningful opportunities for all. 4️⃣ Investment from both government and industry is crucial to ensure that no one is left behind in the workforce. It's through these investments that we can provide equal access and support to individuals from underrepresented groups, fostering a more inclusive and prosperous society. Lastly, let's take a moment to reflect on the impact of this particular project. With only 120 registered female apprentices in industrial mechanic millwright roles in Ontario, this initiative will increase representation by 8%, adding 10 incredible women to the field! Just imagine the possibilities if we all committed to increasing our numbers by even 2-10%. Together, we can achieve remarkable results. I am honored to be a part of an organization like Build a Dream that is dedicated to driving positive change in the workforce. Let's continue to push boundaries, challenge stereotypes, and build a future where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive. #BuildADream #DiversityandInclusion #EmpoweringWomen #BreakingBarriers #WorkforceDevelopment
