It's easy to feel helpless when disaster strikes. It's an even worse feeling when you are half a continent away but your heart is still aching from video coming out of the affected area. But, like Mr. Rogers said, look to the helpers. The Los Angeles wildfires have shown us that disasters and destruction affect all levels of wealth and social standing, and thousands can be displaced by a blast of wind changing direction. But immediately, the helpers were mobilized. Not just the water bombers from Quebec and Mexico, but neighbours who tried to help with evacuations. People donating a year's worth of supplies in a day to help the shelters with the pets found or dropped off for safety. 200 emergency fosters found for shelter dogs in the path of the fires. Steve Guttenberg helping the LAFD move vehicles blocking the road. In Peterborough County, the possibility of a wildfire of such magnitude is low, but never zero. We have more weather-related causes of catastrophe; tornadoes, ice storms, floods are all things we've experienced in the last few decades. But we also know that when the going gets tough, the tough come out to help their communities. We have just over 150 volunteers with Emergency Management sills listed. Our friends at Rotary, Lions, Kinsmen and more don't just throw parades and spelling bees. They mobilize to help where it's needed. Be prepared, but be comforted. Our hearts go out to the Los Angeles community in light of the devastating wildfires. Nearly 30,000 acres are actively burning in LA County as of 1 p.m. PT/3 p.m. CT today, with the Palisades and Eaton fires still 0% contained. Our CEO, Talia McAllister, who grew up in Ventura County, said: "Although fires are relatively common in California, the January 2025 wildfires will impact more people, animals and homes than nearly any other fire season in Los Angles County - perhaps even the entire state. It is thanks to the brave firefighters, EMTs, police and other first responders that tens of thousands of people have been safely evacuated as the Santa Ana winds blow sparks, embers, ash and smoke at high speeds across the area, leading to an unpredictable pattern of additional fire outbreaks. While it can be tempting to point fingers and politicize disasters like this, it's important to remember that wildfires and other natural disasters impact us all without prejudice. (January 16, 2025) – In response to the devastating wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles, particularly in Pacific Palisades and Altadena, Duplo USA Corporation today announced a $10,000 donation to support immediate disaster relief and recovery operations. These past two weeks, I had the privilege of volunteering with World Central Kitchen during the Eaton Canyon and Pacific Palisades fire relief efforts in Los Angeles County. What struck me most wasn't just the immediate impact of providing meals and essentials to displaced residents and first responders - it was witnessing how quickly a community can come together in times of crisis. The reality is that climate-driven disasters are becoming more frequent in our communities. But organizations like WCK show us how local action can make a real difference. Their model is beautifully simple yet incredibly effective: show up where needed, work with local partners, and get resources directly to people who need them most. Over the past two weeks, the residents and response teams in Ruidoso, New Mexico, have faced intense challenges as they combat the devastating wildfires. The South Fork and Salt fires have scorched more than 25,500 acres in New Mexico, forcing as many as 8,000 people to evacuate and destroying nearly 1,400 structures, which may include 500 homes, according to state officials. The remarkable stories of volunteers and evacuees coming together in the face of adversity have been truly inspiring. The way our community mobilized bringing volunteers from near and far is a powerful testament to the human spirit. But our work is far from over, and Red Cross will continue to be here to support and uplift those affected as we rebuild and recover. Here's a glimpse of our work on the ground to date: - 185+ Red Cross disaster workers from all over the U.S. are responding and helping people recover. - 1.8K+ overnight stays have been provided for people who were forced to evacuate their homes. - 18.2K+ meals and snacks have been distributed in shelters and disaster-impacted areas with partners. - 160+ reunification requests have been supported from families and friends looking for loved ones. Our disaster teams will help assess the damage so that we can continue to meet the evolving needs of these communities in the days and weeks ahead. My heart aches as Southern California faces a relentless battle against the onslaught of raging wildfires tearing mercilessly through Los Angeles County and beyond. Family, friends, and colleagues are struggling and losing their homes. The devastation is incomprehensible. Human Impact: • The death toll has tragically risen to 10 lives lost, with thousands more displaced. • Malibu, Hollywood Hills, and Pasadena communities have been severely affected, with ongoing risks to air quality and water safety. Scale of Devastation: • Over 130,000 residents evacuated, with some displaced multiple times. • More than 2,000 homes, businesses, and structures destroyed across multiple fires. • The Palisades Fire alone has spread to 19,978 acres, making it one of the largest and most destructive in the region. Emergency Response: • Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency and deployed 8,000 National Guard members to support firefighting efforts. • Federal aid approved by President Biden, covering full disaster response costs for 180 days. • Local authorities enforced curfews and mobilized law enforcement to protect evacuated areas. • The California prison system has now deployed nearly 800 incarcerated firefighters. Disruptions: • 95,000+ power outages reported, with restoration efforts underway. • Major events such as the Lakers game and the Rams playoff matchup relocated or postponed for public safety. • Schools remain closed with digital resources and mental health support offered to affected families. As Californians cope with the trauma and massive destruction of the wildfires, more than 400 American Red Cross workers, many from Northern New England, are helping to ensure no one faces this heartbreaking time alone. We’re coordinating closely with our partners to provide food, shelter, emotional support and other critical aid. Tuesday morning, more than 700 evacuees woke up in Red Cross shelters, many of whom are struggling after losing everything. We want people to know that our shelters are a safe place for everyone. A week after the fires first sparked, some 92,000 people are still under mandatory evacuation orders. The threat isn’t over as dangerous fire weather conditions continue with winds as strong as 70 mph fanning the flames. Many utilities are being shut off to help prevent new fires. The climate crisis has been a key driver in increasing the risk of wildfires in the western U.S. during the last two decades. With more frequent and intense disasters upending lives, the Red Cross is now launching twice as many relief operations for major disasters than a decade ago. Families are depending on the Red Cross for assistance now, and we need your support. The devastating wildfires sweeping Los Angeles are a stark reminder of how extreme weather patterns can create perilous conditions and lead to natural disasters ⬇️ Last winter, a torrent of torrential and deadly rainstorms in Southern California caused dense vegetation growth. Then came nearly a year of exceptional drought, in which Los Angeles received just 2 percent of its normal rainfall. With the vegetation dangerously dry and powerful Santa Ana winds gusting over 100 miles per hour, this “weather whiplash” contributed to one of the most destructive and costliest wildfire events in U.S. history. Across LA County, over 12,000 structures (schools, homes, businesses) are gone, and over 40,300 acres have burned. While the devastation has been widely reported, the full extent of the impact is still unfolding.
