Interestingly, I feel like the "What Bosses Think" chart is over simplifying and stereotyping leaders. Put yourself in a middle manager/supervisors position. You have five to 20 direct reports. You have worked for the last five years to help your team grow and become the best that they can become. Each of your team members had a great year and at the end of the year you tell your boss, "All of my people deserve a raise." Your request for a raise for all your people at the level you feel is fair is denied and you are told to retain your people with "engagement" activities. So, you desperately try to come up with workplace "culture" activities that help your employees feel valued without it costing the company more money than upper leadership feels is necessary. As a leader you are doing your best with what you have. This doesn't make you a bad guy or gal. It doesn't make you a disconnected fool who doesn't understand what his or her people want. It simply makes you another employee or person working in a system that is full of compromises. Don't blame bosses and leaders for the system that they have to work in as well!
