🚉 Exciting News for Langley and Willowbrook! On June 17th, Council gave third reading and final adoption to the proposed Transit-Oriented Area (TOA) designations and parking updates, marking a significant step towards enhancing the Langley's transit infrastructure and urban development. Key Updates: 🔸 New TOA Designations: Willowbrook Skytrain Station, Langley City Skytrain Station, Langley Centre Bus Exchange 🔸 Removal of Minimum Residential Parking Requirements: This change aims to encourage the use of public transit and reduce reliance on personal vehicles 🔸Exception for Accessible Stalls: There will still be a requirement of 0.05 Handicapped Parking spaces per dwelling unit to ensure accessibility. These changes aim to promote transit-oriented development, making our urban spaces more accessible and sustainable. The designated TOAs are expected to see increased density as outlined in the accompanying image. In her keynote presentation at PUBLIC REALM & URBAN SPACES Smart Class 2024, Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) Director of Policy and Technical Affairs, Antoneta Horbury, highlighted the key points from the CIHT's recently published report on “Creating a Public Realm for All”. Antoneta explored the importance of proper engagement with those who could potentially use a scheme. She also addressed reducing barriers in the design stage, the difficult decisions which need to be made and how best to make them, and reducing barriers after implementation, including the importance of maintenance and reinstatement. Often times people can’t describe what it is they love about the community they live in or are visiting, or for that matter what attracts small businesses and entrepreneurs. There can be a lot of factors, but a big one that is not as noticeable is when leaders work to focus on people first, and the walkability of their downtowns and commercial districts. Encouraging and building for other modes of transportation into and within a downtown district are also important, whether public transit or bikes etc. — getting away from a car centric state of mind. In the end, thinking about walkability in the day and evening increases safety, accessibility, helps people re/discover their downtown community, which can also allow people to explore more, stay longer and support and bolster their local economy. It’s one step (of many!) in the right direction. ☺️
