In today’s diverse professional environment, understanding and practicing allyship is more than a moral imperative—it's a strategic one. Allyship in the workplace involves actively supporting colleagues who are marginalized or underrepresented, ensuring that everyone has equal opportunities to succeed and be heard. How to Be an Effective Ally? Listen: Active listening is crucial. Understand the challenges faced by underrepresented groups without overshadowing their voices. Educate Yourself: Continuously educate yourself on issues affecting your colleagues. This knowledge will help you avoid harmful assumptions and stereotypes. Speak Up: Use your privilege to challenge discriminatory behaviors and practices. Advocacy involves taking risks and standing up for what is right, even when it’s uncomfortable. Commitment to Action As we continue our journey towards creating more inclusive workspaces, let’s commit to being intentional in our actions and steadfast in our support for each other. Allyship is not a label but a practice—an ongoing one that evolves as we learn and grow together. Happy International Women’s Day to all! Today holds special significance for me as I reflect on our ongoing commitment to nurturing diversity and inclusion within our workplace. Bright and early this morning, my colleagues joined me for our #InspireInclusion walk in Bangalore. Colleagues across 8 cities participated in the #InspireInclusion walk, demonstrating our collective commitment. As I walked alongside the incredible women in our team, I had the privilege of engaging in heartfelt conversations, sharing experiences of Deloitte culture, and listening to their inspiring stories. The energy and enthusiasm displayed by everyone reaffirmed our dedication to fostering an environment where every voice is valued and respected. At Deloitte Consulting, we firmly believe that diversity isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a fundamental pillar that fuels innovation, ignites creativity, and propels us towards success. Using a compelling new film (Am I a Racist?) as the starting point, Jason Riley of The Wall Street Journal challenges the effectiveness of DEI initiatives in reducing racial bias. He highlights the financial burden and limited success of these efforts. However, my experience with an early version of "DEI" at Deloitte in the mid-1990s presents a sharply different result. Deloitte's Chair Mike Cook, introduced "Men and Women as Colleagues" to address the disparity in promotion rates between genders. This initiative focused on changing the mindset and culture to recognize performance, leading to a significant increase in women advancing to Partner level, almost immediately. But a couple of years in the number declined. Many worried that this signaled a return to the past. I observed instead that the class did not have enough qualified candidates. I was proved right. Deloitte has enjoyed an upward trajectory of new women Partners ever since. This underscores the importance of creating equal opportunities based on merit to drive real advancement. The title of the initiative describes its goal brilliantly--Colleagues! But, now we witnessing the contrast from Nirmala Sitharaman, Smiti Irani, Shefali Vaidya (a well-known Saree afficionado), and not to forget INC's super lady Sonia Gandhi keeping Saree on the song! According to the 2019–20 Handloom Census, 72.29% of handloom workers in India are women, with over 38 million weavers in the country. According to Statista, the market for sarees, blouses, and petticoats in India was worth 288 billion Indian rupees in 2021. The Indian saree market is expected to reach ₹61,700 crore by 2025, a 6% compound annual growth rate. In 2023, sarees were the most-bought product on Flipkart, and during its Big Billion Days online sale, Flipkart reported one saree bought every minute, totaling 11,600 kilometers of fabric. I am sure the #sareenama trend would become common across workplaces, especially the modern one's shattering the old age Corporate's Power Dressing beliefs of a suite wearing woman hobnobbing other C suite executives! I am sure the sarees thus bought and worn find some noble re-purpose rather than earning the bad reputation of ex TN CM, Jay Jayalaitha, who had amassed 10500 sarees and to match them, some 2500 pairs of footwear! As we mark #internationalwomensday2024 on March 8, I find myself reflecting on its profound significance, both in my role as a Global #Consumer Industry Leader and as a proud member of the LGBT+ community. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing journey towards #genderequality and the importance of #diversity and #inclusion in the workplace and society at large. In the dynamic world of the consumer industry, where adaptation and innovation are the keys to success, the unique perspectives and experiences that women bring to the table are invaluable. They are not just contributors but are leaders who drive change and foster growth. Celebrating International Women's Day is not just about recognizing the achievements of women but also about acknowledging the work that still needs to be done to create truly inclusive environments where every individual can thrive. For me, as an LGBT+ individual, this day is also a call to recognize the intersecting challenges that women face, particularly those from marginalized communities. It’s a reminder that our efforts towards equality must be inclusive, acknowledging and addressing the diverse barriers that women encounter because of their sexuality, race, ethnicity, disability, or any other aspect of their identity. International Women's Day is also a day of personal reflection. It's a time to honor the struggles and celebrate the victories of those who have fought for the rights and recognition that many of us now enjoy. It’s also a day to recommit to the cause, knowing that each of us has a role in shaping a world that values and empowers every woman and girl, irrespective of their background or whom they love. As we commemorate this important day, I am reminded of the collective responsibility we hold to support and elevate women in all their diversity. Let us take this opportunity to renew our commitment to building a more equitable world, where everyone has the chance to lead, to innovate, and to prosper. Let's continue to work towards a future where every day is one where women's contributions are celebrated and their rights are upheld. As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, Senior Director Di Cui describes her experience as a working mom and how #TeamFTI's support has been invaluable to her success. Why would you recommend FTI Consulting to other women? Di: Prior to joining in November 2023, I had worked at other consulting and technology firms. FTI Consulting is a truly global and diverse company that brings together people with different perspectives and experiences. I would recommend FTI Consulting to other women because of its people – everyone I've met has been extremely supportive of each other and created a safe, inclusive and flexible working environment. What is your greatest personal or professional accomplishment? Di: I recently became a mother of two girls: a three-year-old and a newborn. I consider being a happy working mother my greatest personal accomplishment. I initially doubted myself and wondered whether I could be a good mom while producing high-quality work. It was my coach and the entire Export Controls, Sanctions & Trade team that provided incredible support and understanding along the way to make this happen. Being fortunate to work with such an amazing and talented team is my biggest accomplishment professionally. Why do we need more women in leadership? Di: I've always believed that empowering women and achieving gender-balanced leadership is essential for any firm and society as a whole. Not only do we need more women in leadership, but we also need to recognize and celebrate all kinds of diversity – age, cultural, racial, religious. Embracing each other’s differences and learning about each other’s perspectives eventually creates shared values and makes a stronger team. This, in my opinion, is indispensable for attracting talent, promoting an inclusive working environment and living the values of our corporate culture. What advice would you give to women who are kickstarting their careers? Di: Don’t be afraid to ask for help or guidance when you need to! Your team is there to support you.
