The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off today, on Nov 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. It is used as an organising strategy by individuals and organisations to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
Every year, the UNiTE Campaign focuses on a theme and is supported by the United Nations through the Secretary General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women initiative. This year’s theme is UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls which emphasizes the need for funding prevention strategies to proactively stop gender-based violence.
The theme also aligns with the 2024 IWD theme which is Accelerating Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls by addressing poverty, strengthening institutions, and incorporating a gender perspective into financing.
Violence against women and girls remains largely unreported due to the stigma and shame surrounding it and remains the most pervasive human rights violation around the world. To highlight how much of a serious issue this is globally, here are some statistics:
- 736 million women, almost 1 in 3, have been subjected to physical or sexual IPV, non-partner sexual violence or both, at least once in their lives
- More than 4 in 5 women and girls (86%) are living in countries WITHOUT robust legal protection
- No country is within reach of eradicating IPV and only 25% of countries have systems to track and make budgetary allocations for gender equality and women’s empowerment
- More than 5 women or girls are killed every hour by someone in their family - that's 1 woman or girl every 11 minutes
- 1 in 5 women aged 20-24 were married BEFORE turning 18
- 1 in 3 women have been subjected to violence at least once in their lifetime
- An estimated 483 million women and girls aged 15-49 years, have been subject to sexual violence from a non-partner
- Most violence against women is perpetrated by current or former husbands/intimate partners
- Almost 1 in 3 women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence at least once in their life
- 15 million adolescent girls worldwide, aged 15-19 years, have experienced forced sex
If you would like to support 16 Days of Activism, I am aiming to raise $300 over the next 16 days by joining UN Women Australia in the walk to end violence against women. I've set up my page here: https://lnkd.in/gxB9KNSV
