The Periodic Assessment of Trajectories of Housing, Health and Homelessness Study (PATHS) — a joint research initiative between the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work and UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, focusing on the lives and experiences of people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in LA County — features a representative sample of PEH who were unsheltered, with ongoing monthly survey tracking on housing, health, and well-being even if respondents move into housing or shelter. U.S. homelessness has reached record-breaking numbers, and there are many resources out there to aid these populations. Anything helps when contributing to local organizations or nonprofits that support homeless individuals and families. Economic obsolescence is prevalent among property near homeless shelters, encampments, etc. The loss of value due to such external factors means further strategizing for surrounding property owners, sellers, and agents. On the other hand, this creates a compelling and unique opportunity for buyers entering the market. Conduct research if a listing price is very low or if it is on the market longer than usual. Better yet, contact me or another real estate professional in that area. We all play a role in creating solutions. I stand as ally with National Low Income Housing Coalition, National Homelessness Law Center, National Coalition for the Homeless, and National Alliance to End Homelessness, and all the individuals, commercial enterprises, groups and organizations to amplify the need for evidence-based, permanent solutions to end homelessness. Take a moment today to make your voice heard -- share this post if that's the most expedient way; however, even more helpful is to: Meet with your local, state, or federal elected officials to discuss the real (and by that I mean effective and sustainable) solutions to homelessness: Host a roundtable or other gathering where people with lived experience of homelessness can share their stories with elected officials; Amplify social media put out by National Homelessness Law Center (@homeless_law) on social media channels; Bring your elected officials on a site visit to supportive and affordable housing or other homelessness programs in your community; There are more things you can do -- if they haven't occurred to you, feel free to ask me. Have you read HUD's "Housing First" eligibility requirements to access help through coordinated entry? None of these industrious, struggling workers would be " homeless enough" to warrant any kind of serious attention or level of help. And, my dear friends, therein lies the problem. Housing First is an eligibility screen, not an intervention- and as a result we have to ended chronic homelessness, we have required it. But here is the good news: we can restore compassion, common sense, and local control to the Continuum of Care. We can and we will.

The 2024 GREATER LOS ANGELES HOMELESS COUNT results are in, revealing both progress and ongoing challenges. Los Angeles County and City saw a 0.27% and 2.2% respective decrease in homelessness this past year. These numbers highlight a significant shift: unsheltered homelessness in the County decreased by 5.1% and 10.4% in the City. At the same time, sheltered homelessness increased by 12.7% in the County and 17.7% in the City. While these trends are encouraging, we must remain focused on finding and implementing viable solutions to this ongoing crisis. The critical need for more affordable housing in LA remains. Did you know? The terms houselessness or homelessness includes more than just people who are living “rough” or on the streets. People can experience houselessness in many ways. Housing insecurity includes people who are unhoused but also includes those who may be: • Living in unsafe conditions that do not meet public health and safety standards • Accessing emergency shelters • Temporarily accommodated by couch surfing or at places such as a jail, medical or detox facility, or in transitional housing units • At risk of losing their homes or accommodation for any reason, such as being unable to afford rent increases or domestic violence Anyone experiencing any of these forms of housing insecurity is invited to complete the City's Homelessness Estimation Survey to help inform our work to prevent and respond to housing insecurity in our community. Late last year we told you about an exciting new project and promised to keep you updated. OKC’s Key to Home initiative, a collaborative effort between City Care and 46 other agencies is aimed at decreasing unsheltered homelessness in our community by 75% in two years. In addition to housing, we offer neighbors wraparound services including: Document retrieval Mental and physical health resources  Connection to employment and education services Access to benefits for which they qualify Harm reduction Community integration Skill building and support for client-specific goals Wraparound services support housing stability and are a critical component of our neighbors’ success. To date, we’ve celebrated: 40 neighbors moved out of encampments and into housing! -96% of encampment residents accepted housing -0% have returned to homelessness 8% of our two-year goal.
