“Better #shipyard capacity key to building, refitting 3,500 #greenships by 2050” #GREENMARINE May 24, 2024, - Naida Hakirevic Prevljak “Improving shipyard capacity will be crucial to enable thousands of green ships to join the global fleet in the next two and a half decades, a new report found.” “It is estimated that over 3,500 #ships must be built or refitted annually until 2050, yet the number of shipyards more than halved between 2007 and 2022.” “Shipping contributes around 3% of #globalemissions caused by human activities and the industry is committed to tough targets to cut these. Reaching these targets will require a mix of strategies, including measures to improve #energyefficiency , the adoption of #alternativefuels , innovative #shipdesign and methods of #propulsion .” https://lnkd.in/eMm2kd-T? Hot news from Damen Galati Yesterday, we celebrated a pivotal milestone in the shipbuilding with the official start-off-cutting ceremony held at our shipyard. During this event, we began cutting the first metal parts for two new fully electric ferries, ordered by one of the world's largest ferry operators, BC Ferry from Canada. These vessels will be a proud addition to their extensive fleet, with a total of 10 similar ferries crafted exclusively at Galati. While various teams such as sales, planning & design, project management and purchasing have worked tirelessly to reach this start-cutting milestone, this moment that happens on the production floor holds a unique place in the shipbuilding process It's that very first spark that hits the metal plate that starts shaping the material into something that eventually will become a ship. It is that temperature hotter than the surface of the sun that made us witnessed of forging of a dream into tangible reality. Can you envision the pride and joy of our production team as they, armed with immense know-how, construct one of humanity's most complex creations from simple raw materials? “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.” Antoine de Saint-Exupéry #shipbuilding #sustainability #Damen

Chinese authorities have revealed blueprints for China's next domestically built large cruise liner, signaling their commitment to enhancing the nation's shipbuilding prowess in this specialized domain. Following the successful maiden voyage of the Adora Magic City in 2023, this forthcoming vessel will surpass its predecessor in size and incorporate a uniquely optimized design. Enlarging its capacity by 6,700 gross tons, the ship will boast a total of 142,000 gross tons, featuring an extended length of 341 meters and an additional passenger deck. Despite a modest increase of only 19 passenger cabins, shipyard authorities are resolute in their quest to achieve a significant leap forward in China's capacity for constructing large-scale cruise liners. This commitment is aimed at positioning China in direct competition with renowned European shipbuilders such as Fincantieri, Meyer, and Chantiers de l’Atlantique in the realm of large cruise liner fabrication. Such a strategic maneuver underscores China's aspirations to establish itself as a prominent force within the global cruise industry. Vice President Business Development | Key Account Manager | Oil & Gas | Stakeholder Management | Strategy | Supply Chain | Building relationships to increase company's value and profits
It may sound as an obvious point, but it has ramifications, especially because "China, South Korea and Japan are responsible for constructing nearly the entire world deadweight capacity on order". This is a worry because, if building new vessels follows the same logic of other businesses, new building is more lucrative than retrofitting. The article points out that "It is estimated that over 3,500 ships must be built or refitted annually until 2050, yet the number of shipyards more than halved between 2007 and 2022"; I believe that there is some food for thoughts here... #shippingindustry #emissionsreduction #newvessels #retrofitting #newtechnology
