VESSEL DRY DOCK DURATION There are lots of factors that determine the duration a vessel should stay on dock, irrespective of the job scope. Whether it is 1st, 2nd or 3rd special survey. I will bullet point few of such factors and advise shipowners and managers to revisit their past experiences, if such factors really apply. Every good Superintendent must acquaint himself of such factors and consider them before taking a vessel to the dock. * Type of maintenance practiced: A vessel that practices PREVENTIVE maintenance cannot stay as long as a vessel that practices REACTIVE maintenance on dock. You will agree with me that, there is a proper care of machineries under preventive maintenance than any other type of maintenance. It will take longer time to dissemble an equipment or machinery that does not undergo preventive maintenance than the one that undergoes preventive maintenance. Most parts, nuts and bolts may be stuck and special tools required. PLANNING/BUDGETING: If a vessel is taken to a dock without planning and budgeting, the vessel may stay endlessly on the dock. Proper planning to decide machineries that need to be attended to, purchase of the spare parts required, allocating time and duration on each equipment is a factor to be considered as failure to do so, you'll be counting fruitless days on the dock. SHIPYARD: Some shipyards lack some basic special tools required for a Shipyard. When such tools are needed, the yard begins a procurement process, which delays the job. in some cases, they lack some knowledgeable and capable manpower. Trainees would be deployed to standby while the yard source for a capable hand to drive through. RESUMPTION AND CLOSING TIME: If you are repairing or dry docking your vessel in a Shipyard, it is advisable you resume and close with the yard. Once you fail to be at the forefront of the repair, your days at the dock would be elongated. Ensure to have a job plan for each day, hold regular meeting with the yard especially in the morning. Discuss the job scope for each day with the yard and let adequate manpower be assigned. please do not stop there! Supervise the job from beginning till the end.
