Great to see that there are more than 350 organizations already committed to this year's Challenge and willing to be named publicly, including schools, universities, government departments and agencies, NGOs and networks, farms and others businesses. Our theme this year really speaks centrally to the need to move our minds and hearts from "me to we," and to seeing the "beloved community" as the basis for and destination of transformative change. My husband and I had never participated in a Trash Bash and wanting to mentor some young leaders with East End Communities and learn from groups doing this work, we volunteered at the River Lakes, Bays 'N Bayous Trash Bash and helped clean the Kuhlman Gully in Houston, Texas. Some of the items we found: - plastic bags - plastic drinking water bottles - beer bottles - styrofoam cups, plates, bowls - condom wrappers - soda cans - food wrappers - metal shopping carts from grocery stores - spray paint aerosol cans - potato chip bags - plastic food containers - advertising signs - loteria cards - parts of styrofoam portable coolers - dirty diapers - sterno metal cans It broke my heart to see all of this trash, that will wind up in our waterways, but my heart was so happy seeing these volunteers (of all ages) come out and serve the community in this manner (even those who were differently abled came out via Uber, just wow!!) So many organizations are doing similar work in our communities and collaborating to serve together was so exhilarating! We collectively got out of our silos this morning and joined our superpowers to make a positive impact on the environment. Our goal was to join existing efforts so we can replicate these best practices in different neighborhoods in our city. Imagine what we can do synergistically to be part of the solution to reducing health disparities where we live, learn, work, worship and play? What #healthycommunities and #healthypeople we would be? Today, proves that it is possible! Let's talk Farm Bill. Stuff has been happening. Late last week, Senate Ag Committee Chair Stabenow released a section by section proposal called the Rural Prosperity and Food Security Act, and early this morning House Ag Committee Chair Thompson released draft text called the Farm, Food, and National Security Act. Before the day ends, I wanted to share a few thoughts. First, it was heartening to see that a number of cooperative priorities, such as the extensions of the Rural Cooperative Development Grant Program and the Rural Energy Savings Program were included in both proposals. Second, now is the time for those who care about cooperatives and rural communities to start studying the proposals and making sure Congress knows what they like. While there is good stuff in both, they are different. And we need to work together to make sure as many good ideas as possible find their way into the final Farm Bill packages. For instance, Senate Chair Stabenow's Rural Prosperity and Food Security Act includes the Rural Partnership Program that takes a thoughtful, comprehensive approach to providing people in rural communities the tools and resources for locally-led solutions. And the big deal is that it includes base-line funding - meaning that it positions the program for secure mandatory funding, like most of the commodity, conservation, and nutrition programs already have. In regular-people talk, that means it puts rural communities at the adult table, as opposed to the folding table in the living room that doesn't get the big plate of turkey with the juiciest cuts. From the co-op perspective, it is great to see that RPP calls out co-ops as eligible partners - which makes a world of sense given how rural people have used co-ops for generations to level the playing field and ensure access to markets and infrastructure. Here's the point: Now is the time for stakeholders to identify where the good ideas are in these proposals and work to make sure these good ideas find their way into the this evolving legislation. For more than a decade, our Double Up Food Bucks program has helped families in Flint, Michigan access more fresh fruits and vegetables. In fact, Double Up has been so popular in Flint that the city has become a centerpiece for program innovations. But despite this historic impact, Double Up usage in Flint — unlike in every other community where the program is available in Michigan — has declined in recent years. We recently launched a new community engagement strategy in Flint that increased Double Up usage by 49% in 2023.
