An Israeli company has developed a nanomaterial-based industrial additives that allow for achieving lightweight and sustainable materials — making it an ideal component for enhancing the properties of plastics used in planes, trains, and yes even automobiles. The proprietary additives developed by Petah Tikva-based Nemo Nanomaterials can be mass produced in order to supplement a large range of parts. The additives are based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). VP Business Development Jonathan Antebi says he and co-founder and CEO Alexander Zinigrad began to develop the CNTs-based additives after realizing the potential of existing nanomaterial to enhance various kinds of plastics and other industrial material. “We established Nemo to take the promise of nanocarbons and bring it into industrial reality,” Antebi tells NoCamels. “A team of experts – of engineering, mechanical plastics, chemistry – enabled us to take an idea and convert it into actual up-and-running technology,” he says. #nanomaterials #nanocarbons #industrialadditives #additives #israelinnovation #israelitech #plastics

What is BNNT ? BNNT is a multi-use super material that can produce a ‘fibre’ 100 times stronger than steel but as light as carbon fibre, super flexible, more thermally conductive than copper, and able to sustain high temperatures of up to 1000 degrees without degrading. The market has recently focused the use of BNNT on lithium sulphur batteries, which have massive markets such as EVs, drones, cell phones. BNNT is also ideal for the aviation and space industries, as its super light weight can reduce the weight of componentry while maintaining structural integrity by boasting a first-class strength-to-weight ratio. In addition, the technology is being used in small quantities to polymers, resins, fibres, precious metals, and glass to improve their mechanical properties. “Scientists and industry have been aware of the incredible properties of BNNT for many years, but the cost of production has been a huge obstacle to widespread testing and utilisation of the nanomaterial,” said PPK CEO, Marc Fenton. “By lowering the cost substantially, we will improve access and ensure more companies can test and validate the performance of BNNT in their products.” Fenton believes the oppoetunity is huge, as many potential applications of BNNT are still in their development stage. “These have been made more achievable now as a consequence of our investment to drive the cost of production down,” he said. PPK Group meanwhile invests in high-potential science and technology companies with a current focus on nanomaterials, energy storage solutions. and artificial intelligence. The company’s current portfolio of investments includes ASX-listed lithium sulphur battery technology group Li-S Energy (ASX: LIS), energy storage solutions company PowerPlus Energy, and nanomaterials producer BNNT Technology.

Lithium metal batteries are among the most promising candidates of the next generation of high-energy batteries. They can store at least twice as much energy per unit of volume as the lithium-ion batteries that are in widespread use today. In conventional lithium-ion batteries the anode is made of carbon in the form of graphite, and graphite has reached its energy density limit. A new anode material is required to improve battery performance, and that material is silicon. Silicon can store up to 10 times more lithium compared to graphite which enables batteries to have much greater energy. But silicon swells dramatically when it is charged with lithium and that can cause it to crack and stop working. Graphite, however, remains the more common anode material because silicon expands by almost three times in volume during alloying, and techniques like nanostructuring need to be used to prevent the silicon from breaking apart during this expansion. As sulfur is abundant on Earth, these batteries could be cheaper and more environmentally friendly than LiBs, while also potentially exhibiting higher energy densities. Despite these advantages, the deployment of Li–S batteries has so far been limited, as many of these batteries also have a low cycle life and a high self-discharge rate.
