Fire Alarm System Isolations - When requesting isolations, it is important to consider minimising the amount of detection isolated, to ensure that as much detection can be left live without the risk of false activations during the isolation period. Alternative detection methods in lieu of the existing system detection could even be considered if able e.g., replacing smoke detectors with thermal detection, if an isolation is of an extended period or the impact to existing occupants/operations is necessary. Depending on the system installed, individual devices may be able to be isolated versus an entire area, or only certain devices may need to be removed. As always, speak with your Fire Protection Service provider about what you want to achieve to ensure that the end result will mean your fire systems continue to provide life safety and building protection as and where required.

This week, we're answering a common question from our customers: Question: What is the minimum separation between services? Answer: Within our FR Board seal system, services do not require a minimum separation. However, an important exception to note is when FR Pipe Wraps are utilised. In these cases, a minimum separation of 30mm from other services in the aperture is necessary to ensure optimal fire protection integrity. Fire Blankets generally cover small fires in Class A, B & F, or can be used as a thermal barrier against radiant heat in a fire situation. It must be located in an easily accessible place near the fire risk, free from obstruction when removing the fire blanket from its protective cover. It is normally placed on an exit pathway to ensure that the trained user has the option to fight or flight the fire. A location sign must be used in commercial or multi-occupancy residential applications to help identify the fire blanket location quickly. AS2444, Section 6.4.3 Requires the mounting height at 2.0m above the floor area and visually acuity when approaching the fire blanket.
