Promoted to Senior Superintendent at JOC Construction. People seem to be surprised at my new career. Don't be. It was years in the making and really seems to be a natural progression for me. Spending 25 years in IT then changing careers into a construction field was not as difficult as one might think. My dad was developer and residential builder. So I always had a passion for construction/engineering. In getting my Bachelors and Masters in Electrical Engineering at Ga Tech, introduced me to different engineering fields including Civil and Mechanical. With a basic understanding of construction and my years of IT experience with a plethora of software expertise, I have been able to quickly adapt to the software tools used in the field such as Bluebeam, Sketchup, AutoCAD, Chief Architect, Buildertrend, Procore and more. With the engineering degree, it gave me a strength of critical thinking and problem solving that I use in this new career field. Every experience and piece of knowledge through my life has given me skills to excel in this new direction. The job has been rewarding as I am faced with new challenges and new opportunities to rise up and solve problems. There are days I get to be hands on and do a little construction. Then there are days I have to use my knowledge to find a solution or draw a detail to help a sub-contractor understand what needs to be done. So it is never routine and thus never boring. I can read construction plans and see all the pieces in my mind as a final product. I can create a detail schedule of the job in order to maximize construction time lines to bring the job in on time or ahead of schedule. I can work with the clients on design changes and even create some drawings if needed. I am currently running a renovation/revitalization of a 32,000 square foot building that sat empty for 20+ years. The building was a perfect backdrop for a scene from the Walking Dead. The interior space had to be completely gutted with all above ground HVAC, electrical and plumbing removed along with many of the CMU walls. A 17 ton press and other equipment also had to be removed. Then had to open the slab up and run new sanitation lines. It is a great feeling to bring something back from the brink of destruction. I am 6 months into the project and should have the interior completed in another two months. Just waiting on an electrical panel that is on back order so the HVAC can be hooked up. Starting the outside work soon which will include a new parking lot with an underground water detention system, new gas line, water lines and two fire hydrants. I am very grateful that JOC Construction gave me an opportunity. I am not sure if any other company would have taken the risk on someone that spent their entire working life in IT and with in a short number of years be given the lead on running large construction projects. This leads to a question, if you love the work you do, is it still work?

Selection of Jack system choose the appropriate jack system based on the weight and size of the steel components. Hydraulic jacks (hydraulic jacks with piston-strokes & tension member is a lifting cable consists of seven-wire prestressed steel strand and is anchored to the load) are commonly used for heavy lifting due to their capacity and control. Safety Features Integrate safety features into the jack system, such as overload protection and emergency stop mechanisms. Include fail-safe mechanisms to prevent catastrophic failures. Integration with construction sequence align the heavy lifting plan with the overall construction sequence to optimize efficiency. Plan lifts in a way that minimizes disruptions to other construction activities construction method preparation ensure the foundation is ready to support the jacks and the lifted structure. Verify that the steel components are properly positioned for lifting. Installation of Jacks Place hydraulic or mechanical jacks at designated lifting points. Remove jacks systematically while ensuring the stability of the structure. Inspection and quality assurance conduct thorough inspections after lifting to ensure structural integrity. Documentation document the entire lifting process, including load capacities, lifting points, and safety measures taken. Using a jack system for heavy lifting in steel bridge construction requires precision, careful planning, and a focus on safety.  

I strongly believe the primary reason I have a successful career spanning 25 years in the construction industry is my attitude. It isn’t as simple as having a positive attitude. I firmly believe that everything will work out and that every challenge is an opportunity. As an electrical apprentice, I showed up every day (ok, most days), believing I would have a great day. I believed that I could handle any challenge that was thrown at me by taking everything one step at a time. I was right. I had rough days, but it is easier to get back up when you are knocked down if you started in a positive space. As a Project Manager, I have had foremen on my projects who were initially annoyed by my “everything is going to be just fine” attitude, but eventually welcomed it. I have never solved a problem by worrying about it. I have solved many problems by trusting there was a solution that just needed to be discovered. Worrying restricts creativity and narrows my focus, effectively cutting off solutions. On my very first project as a Project Manager, I really didn’t have experience to lean on when problems came up. Instead, I had to trust that as long as I was open to solutions and kept moving forward, solutions would appear. They did. Every time. There was a note on the Architectural drawings stating that the curtainwall and electrical subcontractors should coordinate to support light fixtures that would be mounted to the exterior of the building at 2 elevations, 42 & 58 stories up. That was it. Basically, figure it out yourselves. The curtainwall subcontractor understandably did not know electrical code and really couldn’t help much. So, I went back to my office where I had a sample light fixture with sample accessories. I started handling the parts and let myself get lost in thought. It didn’t take long before I had an idea. I called J&A to see about getting a 10” piece of 2” rigid conduit with an inside thread. They could have it for me the next day. I then called the curtainwall subcontractor to see if they could make a hub on their curtainwall that we could thread the 2” conduit over. They could. We did a mock up and the architect approved it. We had our solution! Sidenote: This is one of the reasons that I love construction. I love it when my ideas get incorporated into a project. Since I’m not an architect or engineer, I never expected that would be the case. I would follow a similar process anytime I had a problem and no (yet) obvious solution. There were times I would get overwhelmed when nothing seemed to go my way. That’s when I knew I had to take a break, go for a walk, listen to music, etc.. I had to interrupt the negative thought pattern I was in. I didn’t succeed on that project because I suddenly knew how to be a Project Manager. Our tips on working in Civil Construction    Here at PCS we believe in getting the job done the right way. It is measured from the load-bearing point at one end of the sling to the load-bearing point at the opposite end (except for wire rope slings). - Hitch : The way the sling is fastened to or around a load. - Headroom : Clearance above the load to allow for an unobstructed lift. - Sling Angle : The horizontal angle between a sling (or sling leg) and the load when pulled taut. - Working Load Limit (Rated Capacity) : The maximum static load permitted by the manufacturer. 2. Basic Rig Planning : - Weight of the Load : Accurately estimate the weight of the load to ensure a safe lift. - Type of Hitch and Number of Slings or Legs : Consider the load’s size and shape, load control (balance, slippage), attachment points, and any fittings needed to connect the sling to the lifting device or load. - Reach and Angle of the Sling : Available headroom, obstructions, and type of hitch are crucial factors. The angle at which a sling is used significantly affects its capacity. Use the longest reach possible for minimum stress on the sling. - Protect the Load and Sling from Damage : Select the appropriate sling material for the load and environment. Use softeners (shims, padding, or sling protectors) to prevent damage at corners or projections. Regularly inspect slings before each use. - Protect Personnel : Safely position and utilize personnel during rigging and lifting. Use a line to stabilize or maneuver the load during the lift. 3. Center of Gravity (CG) : - Divide the object into shapes to find the area/volume and CG. The CG is the point where the entire weight of the object can be considered concentrated. - Knowing the CG helps determine the optimal lifting points and ensures stability during lifting operations.
