Being in the travel and tourism sector, we are always interested in our industry's current events. Royal Caribbean cruise line is one of only two cruise lines that sail out of Galveston year round so they have a direct impact on the Texas economy, especially the coast. What are your thoughts about the growing popularity of cruise vacations and the sometimes negative impact it can have on the environment, especially the popular ports?
Ocean cruising has gotten more popular since services resumed in 2021. In this article we learn that Royal Caribbean is attracting first time cruisers more than ever. In response to demand many ocean lines are building new ships as fast as they can. Royal, Princess, Disney and Virgin launched new ships this year and Celebrity, MSC, Norwegian, Royal and Disney are amongst those launching new ships in 2025. At the same time, popular ports of call like Key West, Florida and Juneau, Alaska are limiting how many ships and how many berths can visit on the same day. We are definitely seeing a Tug o' War emerging between groups that want the revenue travelers bring and the locals & environmentalists that worry about the negative impact ships and masses of people are having on the environment. I look forward to the solutions the cruise industry and environmentalists come up with to minimize the negative effects and still generate the revenue these ports need. What do you think? What kinds of solutions are you already seeing? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Cruise lines are having a great year, and guests – along with shareholders – are being rewarded. It’s a good year to be a cruiser. Or better yet, to own a cruise line. At the annual Seatrade Cruise Global convention back in April, the industry’s largest, the mood was celebratory with record attendance, a record number of exhibits and record enthusiasm. “Happy Days Are Here Again” was the unmistakable message, and we couldn’t agree more. The industry is on a roll. No more pandemic. No more masks. No more vax checks or Covid tests. No more isolation. As a result, a record number of cruisers set sail last year – nearly 32 million, up two million from the pre-pandemic record set in 2019. Meanwhile, industry trade group CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) is forecasting another two million plus passengers this year. “The concept of pent-up demand is gone,” declared Carnival President & CEO Josh Weinstein, meaning it’s no longer “pent-up” but in full swing. Calling the current demand level “unprecedented,” he added that bookings in 2025 were also at record levels and CLIA was forecasting a three-million-passenger increase next year.

Royal Caribbean’s recent shift to surge pricing marks a pivotal moment for cruise line pricing strategy: They are wrapping up tiered volume pricing and replacing a relatively fixed legacy pricing strategy with demand pricing and bundled offers. This means there are likely to be minimal volume discounts; plus additional price premiums applied to bigger groups, bundled offers and when the boat gets full. This turnaround comes on the back of COVID after experiencing a sustained booking surge and positive price response after price trials. While advantageous for top-line revenue growth, demand-based pricing may be a double-edged sword: good for solo travellers, not so good for larger groups, families and budget-conscious / last minute travellers. https://lnkd.in/dEKXZ32t
