#SAPTechEd 2024 is over. There was nothing too surprising or disappointing in it, at least in the sessions that I’ve personally attended. Here are some highlights: 1. Build Code is getting extended with ABAP support (cloud version first) 2. Joule can be extended with custom behaviours 3. AI, AI and more AI all over the place, i.e., in Integration Suite, dedicated JS SDK support for UI5, SAP language model, etc. 4. New Software suite - SAP Business Transformation Management (LeanIX + Signavio + WalkMe) 5. Extensibility Wizard for Public Cloud Actually, sorry! There was one thing that I did not expect, at all and that is: SAP BTP data centers are back! This is an interesting twist, I knew that SAP is going all in on the cloud. But, does that mean they are also after a piece of the hyperscalers’ cake? Hmmm What did you enjoy the most about this year's TechEd? Expectations vs reality at #SAPTechEd 2024 regarding BTP operations so far Expectations: Learn how to operate a large-scale organisation in a scalable and governed way, focus on operating at scale in a robust manner - keeping costs and usage under control. Processes for mass adoption of BTP. Reality: "This is how you operate the cockpit" "This is whom to give access to the cockpit" "This is what services are available" "This is how you estimate costs" Conclusion? Not that SAP is feeding us with some useless basics. Instead, this tells me (and I'm seeing it among customers too) that the understanding of cloud in the context of SAP is still in its infancy. BTP is a good place to be in in 2024 - my take on it. I'm looking forward to the session on Terraform "From clicks to code: Managing your SAP BTP infrastructure with Terraform" at 3:30 pm CET. Who's joining it to see more of large-scale operations of BTP? P.S. I'll talk more about adopting BTP in large-scale organisations during my session at SAPinsider in Copenhagen in November. #SAPTechEd #BTP news from day 1 so far: 1. You can create your own Joule-based (AI) functionalities - I am curious to see how this will work. Can we simply train our own model, e.g. - typing in "give me an update on all relevant statuses" will know what I'm interested in?? Looking forward to trying this out! 2. Generate Integration flows using text-based AI prompts - any integration pros want to comment on how good this can get? 3. Guided transformation from SAP PO - expected, seeing the large volume of such projects! 4. Data lake in SAP Datasphere - huh? Integration with HANA Cloud that is? I wonder, data lake functionality in HANA has been around for a while now, I'm sure? 5. Integrate AI into Fiori/UI5 apps with dedicated JS SDK Support 6. More language models integrated 7. 5 new DCs by the end of 2024 for BTP on Hyperscaler infra. 5 more by early 2026. 8. Repeated once again - SAP Datacenters are coming back!! (News after Neo was sunset). Expected expansion to 8 locations by 2026. P.S. Look at the attached question that was asked at the BTP session - got a good few upvotes ;-) if SAP ever decides to allow this, it'll be the end of the whole innovation story. #SAPTechEd Keynote announcements for app dev: SAP Build Code is getting extended to cover ABAP Cloud (AI-generated code!) for both on-stack and SBS dev. Also uses BAPIs to connect GA in Q1/2025 Extensibility Wizard for Public Cloud is getting released - generate CDS models with Joule, extend S/4 in a guided manner. Pretty cool - launched straight from the app (assume you'll need some dev roles) ABAP Cloud projects can now be managed inside SAP Build Lobby - interesting, although it then jumps to ADT - is Eclipse going to go away in the future? ;-) "Innovating while keeping the core clean has never been so easy" ;-) SAP has their own ABAP LLM trained on 250 million lines of S/4HANA code -> this has potential in my opinion!! New feature of the SAP Discovery Centre is out. Guess what it is ;-) Artificial Intelligence, sure what else were you expecting! Unfortunately, for now, there isn't much for the developers and architects - all business. But one thing is pretty interesting - "Automate SAP BTP administrative tasks and processes with Joule." though still in Beta! SAP TechEd in 2019: Knowledge for those with great achievements or big wallets… SAP TechEd in 2024: Knowledge accessible for everyone, from the comfort of their offices, for FREE! I don’t want to start the “in-person vs remote” debate - both have their pros and cons. I love in-person events - I think they are more effective, but ever since the birth of my son (7 months old already!) it’s been pretty challenging for me to get away for too long. This year, #SAPTechEd is fully virtual and free for everyone.
