How are startups using AI to improve public safety? Startups are finding ways to use technology to detect gun violence threats, speed up emergency response times, and keep weapons out of the hands of dangerous people, Dmitry Sokolowski writes in an article for Forbes. He highlighted Prepared's 911 call support: "Prepared 911 is helping 911 operators do their job quicker and more efficiently. Their tools include real-time translation, video capabilities helping operators see what the caller sees, powerful 360-degree location views, audio transcripts, and suggested courses of action based on caller keywords populated by AI." The Mystery of AI Gunshot-Detection Accuracy Is Finally Unraveling: How accurate are gunshot detection systems, really? For years, it's been a secret, but new reports from San Jose and NYC show these systems have operated well below their advertised accuracy rates. #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #DataScience

When we think about AI, we usually have two possible approaches to this topic. The first one involves chaos and the impending end of humanity, as it is always easier (and perhaps even more lucrative) to sell these kinds of stories by very irresponsible and sensationalistic sectors. The second approach involves understanding the potential of the technology, becoming informed about its capabilities, limitations, and ethical implications, and looking forward to working for its responsible development and application. Unfortunately, in Latin America, the first approach appears to be the norm, hindering the region from realizing the possibilities that this new technology could provide for better governance. I highly recommend this article, which provides a very precise simile, offering a good example of why it is important to understand the risks associated with a negative approach to this 'new' technology.

In this post, I explore how the same government-is-the-problem-not-the-solution narrative about guns has direct parallels to the conversation unfolding about artificial intelligence. To reduce gun violence, advocates need to take on the liberty argument, argues Jonathan Metzl, MD, PhD in What We've Become. Similarly, if we want to realize the benefits of AI, we have to address and debunk the increasingly pervasive and pernicious doomerist narrative that is creating a false antinomy between AI risks and AI ethics. https://lnkd.in/e9afDvWU

And the answer to yesterday's post is (in my opinion): #2, "KIDS KILLED BY GUNS CALL THEIR LAWMAKERS VIA AI DEEPFAKES IN CHANGE THE REF CAMPAIGN" The content created for this campaign would not exist if AI hadn't been used. And talk about emotional power. Brilliant. #marketing #coyotemarketing #businessresults #brandpositioning #mktgwilderness #ai https://bit.ly/ad-age-2

Las Vegas' recent AI implementation in public transit is a first and demonstrates a valuable use case for enhancing public safety and reducing crime. I think this is an AI application that we can get behind. Computer vision, using deep learning models and digital images and videos, can predict weapons with great accuracy. It would be interesting to understand the training sets behind these applications. I suspect that it isn’t perfect and will have some false positives, where an umbrella may mistakenly be identified as a weapon. Privacy concerns are also legitimate. But I think the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. This layered approach, combining both visual AI with technologies like acoustic sensors, offers the best chance of preventing and mitigating violence. I believe this type of AI safety use case can extend beyond public transit, with potential applications in schools, government buildings, offices, and entertainment venues. As technology advances, its role in enhancing public safety will grow, making our communities safer. The United States is witnessing a significant shift in school safety measures as educational institutions across the country are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to detect firearms on their premises. This move is largely driven by the rising concerns over school shootings and the need for more proactive safety solutions. #AI #Schoolsafety https://lnkd.in/gphh5hfb

The message and the technology made equal waves. Shotline, an AI technology platform used the voices of victims killed by gun violence to "bring them back to life" and send important message about gun law changes. Some would say it's deepfakes and unethical. Some would say how else would one make people pay attention to such grave matter. Some would say as long as there's disclosures and the intention is correct, it might be a powerful tool. Brave new world and it's here. #ai #ethicalai #technologyforgood

I've seen a lot of fear and uncertainty about AI recently, but there is so much potential for good with this technology. Just take a look at this story. An organization known as ZeroEyes has created an AI-based gun detection video analytics platform. Recently their platform was put to work in the positive detection of an illegally brandished firearm in New Mexico that resulted in criminal charges. These kinds of AI solutions and platforms are going to have a big role to play in public safety and leading to justice for many cases like this. #AI #PhysicalSecurity #Technology #PublicSafety
