I’m happy to share our new article published in IJC Heart & Vasculature - Repurposing catheter ablation work-up to detect expiratory airflow limitation in patients with atrial fibrillation 🫀🫁 ➡️ This study confirms that expiratory airflow limitation is common and frequently overlooked in AF patients scheduled for ablation. ➡️ Signs of COPD present at cardiac CT can be used to identify patients with expiratory airflow limitation, while lack thereof is highly specific to exclude patients. ➡️ This novel insight has the potential to utilize existing resources from the pre-ablation work-up to facilitate spirometry prioritization. Journal of Intensive Medicine Conclusions CS is a life-threatening condition characterized by acute end-organ hypoperfusion due to inadequate cardiac output that results in multiorgan failure and even death in a nonnegligible proportion of cases. Hemodynamic monitoring allows for early recognition, classification, and precise phenotyping of CS cases, leading to a targeted management scheme that contributes to better patient outcomes. In addition, IHM using an algorithmic approach for managing CS with the rapid deployment of MCS is nowadays the preferred approach, as it is associated with a reduction in mortality.

This includes measurements such as the right ventricular basal diameter, mid-cavity diameter, and longitudinal dimension. 2. “Visual Inspection”: The echocardiographer visually inspects the right ventricle for signs of enlargement, such as increased chamber size compared to the left ventricle, flattening or bulging of the interventricular septum, and decreased contractility. 3. “Functional Assessment”: Assessing the function of the right ventricle, including its contractility and systolic function, can provide further insight into its size and performance. 4. “Doppler Assessment”: Doppler echocardiography may be used to evaluate blood flow patterns in the right ventricle and pulmonary artery, helping to identify conditions such as pulmonary hypertension or tricuspid regurgitation. 5. “Additional Views”: Different echocardiographic views, such as the apical four-chamber view or parasternal long-axis view, may provide additional information about the size and function of the right ventricle. Reasons for right ventricular enlargement observed in echocardiography include: 1. Pulmonary hypertension 2. Right ventricular hypertrophy 3. Right-sided heart failure 4. Tricuspid valve disease 5.
