Retailers' like Target, Walmart, and Walgreens among others are going through major price cuts to spur consumer demand. These same retailers also under-ordered in early 2024 to reduce the amount of warehousing needed. The under-ordering was in response to oversupply issues and the cuts are to combat inflation impacting consumer spending. Both activities will contribute to a decrease in supply and heightened demand. At the same time, we are continuing to see trucking capacity leave the market, check out the graph below of net changes in carriers over the years. What does this mean? The heightened demand will increase logistics volume but the capacity to handle this volume is shrinking. As markets shift, the importance of reliable freight partners will only grow. Searching for bottom barrel rates will leave you burned, those carriers will have higher paying freight available to them. In a sign that "things are getting back to normal" post-pandemic, Walmart is relaxing it's tight restrictions on supplier deliveries. "The retailer wants suppliers to deliver shipments on time 90% of the time and in full 95% of the time, down from a 98% benchmark for both measures set in 2020 amid a surge in consumer demand."
